Did you know that is it UnAustralian not to have a snag at the Polling Station sausage sizzle? I would go so far as to say that I don’t even feel like I have cast my vote if I don’t finish it off with a snag and perhaps a chocolate crackle from the cake stall (with the crackle being slightly melted due to the heat).
I don’t know about you but there is something about the smell of onions that makes me want a snag so bad. Or maybe it is the site of the Dads with their aprons on sweating over the BBQ as their toned arms lovingly turn and turn and turn the snag on the BBQ (unfortunately many dads suffer from snagoverturnitis).
The humble sausage sizzle is the star of community fundraising. Some people take their snag sizzle very seriously. For example, if you are going to run a snag sizzle at Bunnings you must go to Snag University where they teach you about how to present the snag. At Bunnings it is two pieces of bread not one (this can be quite a contentious issue).
So how do people know you are having a snag sizzle at your polling booth? Well it is easy. Four friends developed a site that lists all the election day snag sizzles. Founded by Rosemary Walton (a vegan), Stephen Downes, Gus Pokus and Grant Castner the site is called http://www.electionsausagesizzle.com.au.
It is free to list your snag sizzle with them. There are over 650 sites listed so far (just showing how important the humble snag sizzle is). This site is not a commercial operation and all involved donate their time. They even have the hashtag #snagvotes. They are encouraging you to upload a photo of your event.
The founders behind the idea say “While there is some fun and a bit of silliness in the Snagvotes idea, the underlying objective is clearly to celebrate our democracy, encourage participation in the democratic process and offer support for the community groups and volunteers that run sausage sizzles and stalls on election day, as it is an important means of fundraising for them. The message is “Get together with your community and enjoy a sausage on election day – a great Australian tradition”.”. Well done guys!
On the day you can even rate your snag sizzle. People across Australia can ‘nom nom nominate the best Sausage Sizzle in their electorate, or find the tastiest one nearby. All entries are displayed on maps and in leaderboards, so you can see how the booths in your electorate stack up against others in the nation. Birrahlee Kindergarten is a community-based non-for-profit Kindergarten based in Lane Cove, on election day will be holding their annual Open Day (10am – 12pm).
