Pilates in Lane Cove – Who knew I would enjoy it??

I am not the fittest person around (okay yes I admit it I puff walking up hills).  I am also a slumper and a mouth breather!!  My posture is atrocious and has got worse as I spend hours on the keyboard.

Last year I met Liane Geeves from Pilates Connection.  She was demonstrating Pilates at the Lane Cove Shopping Night. She asked me to come up and try out Pilates.  I was interested.  After all, being an avid magazine reader, I had continually read that Jennifer Aniston and Kate Hudson owe their bodies to Pilates.  If it is good enough for them, it is good enough for me.

So late last year I started doing some Pilates classes, it was a great time to start, as Pilates Connection, had just moved into larger premises and had installed some state of the art equipment.   I have to admit that when I first walked into the studio I was sure that the machines looked like something out of the 50 Shades of Grey Playroom, but I can assure you they are defiantly not and it is all PG rated and quite fun.

I was amazed how quickly Liane was able to work out my lifestyle and  posture issues.  She noticed that I was very hyper mobile and that I probably tripped over all the time.  She was 100% correct, if a surface is uneven – I will trip.

We started doing exercises designed to strengthen my posture and my core.  Everyone talks about core but I really did not understand why it is so important.  Liane explained that the core muscles of the body are the deep muscles of the back, abdomen, and pelvic floor. These are the muscles we rely on to support a strong, supple back, good posture, and efficient movement patterns. When the core is strong, the frame of the body is supported.

Pilates also involves concentrating on your breathing.  I found that I was mostly breathing through my mouth and only taking shallow breathes (no wonder I sound sexy on the phone – which I have to say does lead to disappointment when you meet me!!). By doing Pilates I was learning to breath through my nose.  I also found that after an hour of Pilates I felt less stressed.

One of the benefits of Pilates, is that you do not have to be extremely fit to try it out.  It is a  workout regime for all ages. Liane explained to me that building core strength, focusing on proper alignment, and a body/mind integrative approach make Pilates accessible to all. With thousands of possible exercises and modifications, Pilates workouts can be tailored to individual needs.

I enjoyed it so much that I decided that in 2015 I would try a Pilates Reformer Class.  I actually was lucky enough to try the class out with seven other ITC Facebook Fans and it was a really fun session.  I was amazed that I could sweat so much when it appeared that I was just laying down on a machine but by gosh I was really working out.  (Sorry Mum for using the word sweat – my mum always says Horse Sweat, Men Perspire and Ladies Glow).
