Lost and Found Pets In Lane Cove

There is one thing ITC knows for certain, Lane Cove loves their pets.  bud

We also know that pets go missing quite regularly.  ITC has reunited dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, chicken and guinea pigs.

If you find a pet, the first thing to do (if you can) is to take the pet to the nearest vet and get them to check the pet’s microchip.

You can also place a lost or found notice on Facebook here. If you don’t have Facebook, you can list the lost or found on our website In the Cove.

We have also noticed a few trends that have prevented local vets or the council from easily finding an owner.  Here are a few things that you can do to make sure your pet is found:

  1. Microchip your pet and register the details with Council.  Many different types of pets can be microchipped, so ask your vet if your bird, rabbit, goat or bunny can be microchipped.  More details on microchipping can be found here.   You can also check your pet’s microchip details by clicking here. (When we put in Mr Doggy ITC microchip number it did not display so we will be checking this out with the council asap)
  2. if you move or change your phone number update your details. Update your details so that on the day of your move the new details are available;
  3. Always have two phone numbers registered (we did have a situation where the owner was overseas and the only way the owners knew their pet had escaped was they saw it on ITC);
  4. Do not just rely on a microchip, sometimes it can be difficult to read a microchip (particularly on older pets). Make sure your pet has a collar and your phone number is on the collar;
  5. If possible make sure your phone number is embroidered on the collar, dangling pet tags can get caught in bushes and ripped off.
  6. You can register your pet with specialist pet finding websites such as www.lostpetfinders.com.au or www.petsearch.com.au or  www.lostandfoundpetsaustralia.com  www.petalert.com.au
  7. Always have an up to date photo of your pet;
  8. If you have recently moved, the first place you should look is at your old residence, pets like to return to their homes;

If your pet is lost:

  • Contact your local vet;
  • Contact the Lane Cove Council on 99113555;
  • Contact the Blacktown Animal Rehoming Service on 9839 6161;
  • List your pet on ITC’s Lost and Found page or contact ITC Facebook site;
  • Tell your neighbours and enlist their help in searching for the pet;
  • Be sure to check in ceilings, trees, bushes and sheds (one person found their cat in their dishwasher – alive and well)

If you Find a Pet:

  1. Safety First – a sick or scared animal can act unpredictably;
  2. Take the animal to the local vet and ask for them to check the microchip;
  3. List the lost pet on ITC’s Lost and Found page or contact the ITC Facebook site;
  4. Contact the council, but be aware that Lane Cove Council do not have a pound facility and if they do not find your pet within business hours, the pet will be taken to the Blacktown Animal Rehoming Service.
