The A-Z of Lane Cove – L is for Libraries

Lane Cove Council operate two libraries in the area – Lane Cove Library, located on Library Walk, at Market Square; and the other being Greenwich Library, on Greenwich Road. There is a third library in the area, West Chatswood Library, which is located on Mowbray Road, next to Mowbray Eatery.

Lane Cove Library

Lane Covians love their books and their libraries. The Lane Cove Library “has the highest borrowing rate per capita in NSW – this has been the case since 2002/03. It is the 60th year of the Library – it is also 5 years since it reopened as part of the Market Square Development.” (via Lane Cove Council)

The current Lane Cove Library was officially opened in July 2010, and is quite a drawcard for those living ITC. It has a fab ‘Junior Library’, with endless books, dvd’s etc, and two very cool, and highly coveted, red leather circular reading pods. There are regular Thursday morning storytime sessions for children, and bi-monthly Possum Play fun for 0-2 year olds. In the school holidays, they usually run scheduled kids arts and craft sessions.

The Lane Cove Library also hosts a large range of events, including Knit-ins; a Writers in Residence Group; historic talks; computer training for seniors; and their very popular Book Sales.  The Local Studies section of the Library is terrific.  They hold some really fascinating workshops.  If you need to know any Lane Cove History they will help you hunt it down.  The library is also a great place for HSC studies.  They hold regular HSC study nights with PIZZA.

Always community focused, the library operates a ‘Home Library Service’, which delivers library items to housebound local residents and their carers, and also visits local nursing homes and retirement villages.

Lane Cove Library

Conveniently, Lane Cove Library is a member of the Shorelink Library Network, which allows members to borrow books from some of the other libraries in Sydney’s Lower North Shore.

Recently there have been changes to Shorelink which impact Lane Cove Residents.

Willoughby Library has decided to withdraw from the Shorelink Library Network as of 22 November 2017.

What does this mean for Lane Cove Library Customers?

You will continue to be able to use your Lane Cove Library card to borrow from Manly, Mosman, and North Sydney (Stanton) Libraries.

You will continue to be able to request items from Manly, Mosman, and North Sydney (Stanton) Libraries.

You will continue to be able to access a wide range of eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazines and eComics from the Shorelink Digital Library.

Please do not return Lane Cove Library items to Willoughby Library OR Willoughby Library items to Lane Cove Library. As Lane Cove and Willoughby Libraries will no longer share a database the Lane Cove Library will be unable to return each other’s items and fines will accrue.

Greenwich Libray

Located at 48 Greenwich Road, Greenwich Library is a small branch library, which is open from Tuesday – Saturday. It also offers some events throughout the year, along with school holiday craft sessions.
