Lane Cove loves a Sausage Sizzle

Lane cove Sausage Sizzle

This year is an election year and you know what that means!! Yes, the return of the fundraising sausage sizzle. ITC knows some people who refuse to visit polling stations that do not host a sausage sizzle.  It is also nearly back to school time and this means fundraising for your school and sporting clubs.  One of the best ways to raise funds is to hold a sausage sizzle.

There are certain expectations that come with a snag sizzle. Pity the person who suggests you use brown bread at your snag sizzle.

Important decisions to make when you hold a Sausage Sizzle:

Bread

The most important issue is one slice or two slices of bread. Bunnings is known throughout Australia as the place to grab a snag. Before holding a BBQ at Bunnings you need to attend Snag College. Bunnings are very adamant that there should be two pieces of bread (and we agree).  Joyce from Bakers Delight Lane Cove will be only too happy to help you out with the bread you need for the day.

Sausage

Don’t go for the cheapest option. You want people to come back for more.

You need good time management skills when cooking a snag, nothing is worse than waiting for your snags to cook. Hummerstons Gourmet Meats offers the option of par boiled sausages. So basically, you are just reheating. They are easy to cook and taste great.

If you want to offer something fancy you should look at the huge range of snags offered by Springbok Delights.

If you are cooking outside always keep the snags cool in an esky. However, you may want to take a few out and have them a room temperature before slapping them on the BBQ. The snags will take a shorter time to cook and will cook more evenly. Whatever you do – do not pierce the skin of a snag. You must also resist the urge to play with your snags. They should only be turned over once. Did you know that if you prod your snag, you are just letting the juices flow.

Onions

Onions are not negotiable. You must have them cooking. The smell of onions cooking will bring them to you. It is a pavlovian response. Whatever you do, make sure you use fresh onions. The frozen onions (although easier because they are chopped) have no taste. Use brown onions. The best way to slice in bulk is with a food processor and a slicing attachment.

Condiments

Keep it simple. Only offer tomato or bbq sauce. If you really want to impress you could go out on a limb and offer American Mustard. Always have more sauce than you think you will use.

Food Safety

No one wants to eat a snag and then regret it afterwards for the next few days. You can find a very informative article on food safety and the humble sausage sizzle here

Publicity

Did you know that if you are a community organization you can publicise your event free of charge on the In the Cove website??. Yes – our events calendar is a fantastic way of letting people know that you’re holding a snag sizzle.

You can also list your sizzle on www.findyoursausagesizzle.com.au
https://www.facebook.com/findyoursausagesizzle.

If you are holding your sausage sizzle on election day, there is another way of letting people know about your snag sizzle.

Four friends developed a site that lists all the Election Day snag sizzles.  Founded by Rosemary Walton (a vegan), Stephen Downes, Gus Pokus and Grant Castner the site is called  http://www.electionsausagesizzle.com.au.

It is free to list your sausage sizzle with them.  This site is not a commercial operation and all involved donate their time. They even have the hashtag #snagvotes.

The founders behind the idea say “While there is some fun and a bit of silliness in the Snagvotes idea, the underlying objective is clearly to celebrate our democracy, encourage participation in the democratic process and offer support for the community groups and volunteers that run sausage sizzles and stalls on election day, as it is an important means of fundraising for them. The message is “Get together with your community and enjoy a sausage on election day – a great Australian tradition”!

On the day, people can even rate your snag sizzle.  People across Australia can ‘nom nom nominate’ the best Sausage Sizzle in their electorate, or find the tastiest one nearby. All entries are displayed on maps and in leaderboards, so you can see how the booths in your electorate stack up against others in the nation.  So you can use your democratic right to vote on the best sizzle.  Just go to this link  http://www.ratethesizzle.com.au/

Never underestimate the power of the Sausage Sizzle.  In fact, it is UnAustralian not to have a sausage on Australia Day or Election Day.
