Welcome to our review of the week that was in Lane Cove. It was a big week in Lane Cove with several nasty accidents, a big new store opening, a cocktail bar relaunch and traction on Lane Cove’s Public Transport Issues.

Lane Cove Plaza

Our review literally starts off with a bang, On Wednesday, the rendering/concrete bonding on the Baker’s Delight/Cake Man arcade building crashed to the ground near the Lane Cove Plaza Rotunda (or more correctly the Lloyd Rees Rotunda). One of our roving reporters was grabbing a cuppa when she heard a loud bang and saw debris falling to the ground. No-one was injured.

Lane Cove Business Update

About Life opened in the old Thomas Dux building and Lane Cove came out in force. It’s great that a vibrant shop has opened down the Tambourine Bay Road end of Burns Bay Road. If you’re going to About LIfe make sure you drop into some of the other shops along that part of Burns Bay Road. Many of those shops are independent shops owned by small business people and they would love your support.

The bar above The Cake Man – Lane Cove relaunched and it is now called Bar Blaq. It opened on Saturday night. The Bar has an appetizer menu you can enjoy with a cocktail or glass of wine. The owners are two Lane Cove locals. During the day, the bar is used for hospitality training. You can find out more by visiting their website or their Facebook page.

Traffic Incidents

A pedestrian was hit by a garbage truck and suffered serious foot injuries in Felton Avenue, Lane Cove North on Thursday. Police and Ambulance crews were called to the scene. The pedestrian suffered foot and leg injuries. You can read about the incident here.

There was yet another accident at the corner of Barwon/Figtree Road and Centennial Avenue, Lane Cove West. This intersection has been in the news lately. Lane Cove Councillor Daniel Strassberg (and a Lane Cove West Primary School Parent) has been concerned about this intersection for a while. This is what Daniel posted on the In The Cove Facebook page:

Lane Cove Council requested right hand turns signals into and out of a Barwon / Figtree roads last year after a young cyclist was hit by a car. The response from the RMS was “No” as there has been not enough “serious incidents” at this intersection, but they did put a new “Turn with care sign.” Council can go back but as residents you can also help by contacting the Minister for Roads directly too. Contact details are: The Hon. Duncan Gay, MLC, Parliament House, Macquarie Street, Sydney NSW 2000 ph 9230 2329.

If you would like to email the Hon. Duncan Gay MLC, here is the link

On Friday night, there was another incident at the Corner of River Road West and Longueville Road (just near the Longueville Sporting Club aka The Diddy). Two small boys, aged four and six, were struck by a car around 10pm on Friday 1st April 2016. Both boys were taken to North Shore Hospital; the younger boy was treated for a fractured leg while the older boy did not require any further medical attention. They were both discharged. ITC wishes them a speedy recovery. The driver, a 25-year-old man, was submitted to a road-side breath test, which returned a negative result. Police have advised that investigations to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident are continuing. Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au/

This  intersection is notorious. A roving reporter was recently involved in an accident at that intersection. After his accident we wrote an article about this intersection (which you can read here). Our roving reporter sent the article to the RMS. Our roving reporter was advised that the RMS has recently visited the intersection. He was told the RMS would be installing a further traffic light. This has not yet been installed. ITC drives through this intersection regularly and the red and green traffic arrows can be confusing.

Hollywood in Longueville

Hollywood came to Longueville this week. Lee Byung- Hun is a big star in South Korea and was the first Korean actor to be a presenter at the Academy Awards. There were film crews and stretch limos all around Longueville. The location was arranged by a Lane Cove local who operates a film location business. You can find out more here.

Public Forum to Protect Sydney’s Drinking Water.

Today over 150 people packed the Greenwich Community Centre to hear the International winner of the Goldman Environment Award, Ramesh Agrawal from India speak about Wollongong Coal’s proposed mine expansion in Sydney’s drinking water catchment. The meeting was hosted by Lane Cove Coal & Gas Watch in conjunction with Lock the Gate .

“I want people in NSW to assess Wollongong Coal’s project with full knowledge of Jindal Steel’s corporate record in India. When you know what I know, I don’t think you’ll want this company in your catchment.” — Ramesh Agrawal

The meeting was held in Greenwich as our local member the Hon. Anthony Roberts is the NSW Resources Minister. Lane Cove Coal & Gas Watch, in conjunction with Lock the Gate,  are calling on Anthony Roberts to use the new ‘fit and proper person’ test in the NSW Mining Act, to stop the operators of the mine and to cancel the mining lease.

Lane Cove Public Transport

Speaking of our local member, the Hon Anthony Roberts has arranged for members of the NSW Transport Department to ride along with Lane Cove commuters and feel their pain. On Monday 4th April, he will be catching Bus 251 at Cope Street at 7.33am.  He will be traveling to the Epping Road Interchange. This is your chance to provide your feedback to the NSW Transport Department face to face.
