What is the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson?

The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ is a promotional event designed to build awareness and generate local and national press attention about the vital importance of teaching children to swim to help prevent drowning. The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson was created as a platform to help aquatic facilities and the many different regional, national and international water safety organizations work together to communicate the fundamental importance of teaching children to swim.

Since its inception in 2010, more than 155,000 children and adults have participated worldwide in WLSL lessons generating more than half a billion media impressions about the vital importance of learning to swim. The 2015 WLSL event took place on June 18, 2015 and included 38,170 participants from 22 countries. The 2016 World’s Largest Swimming Lesson (WLSL) will take place over the course of 24 hours at an estimated 500 locations in more than 20 different countries.

Why is Brewer Swimming Involved?

Brewer Swimming is a Supporting Organisation for Team WLSL™. We want to support an event that draws attention to the importance of swimming and water safety, encourages participation in swimming lesson programs and helps spread the word that Swimming Lessons Save Lives™.

Do you need to enroll in a Brewer’s Swimming Lesson to Participate?

No, anyone can be involved in the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson. Children of all ages and abilities, parents, grandparents, friends, and families . . . anyone! We would be so pleased to see anyone involved with In the Cove and Lane Cove participate in this event.  Children under five years of ages must have a guardian in the pool with them.

Sounds Good – How do we participate?

Brewer Swimming has created a registration form on our website along with basic information about the event. People are more than welcome to complete the registration form online at www. brewerswimming.com.au or call us at our office 1300 363 019.

Will there be someone there from the Guinness Book of World Records?

Participating organisations (Brewer Swimming) will be responsible for counting, recording and submitting the total number of lesson participants to qualify for the record. To be included in the Guinness Book of World Record submission, Brewer Swimming is required to submit very detailed proof of recording of their participation including log sheets, photos, videos witness statements and more. Once the submission has been verified by WLSL™ and Guinness Book of World Records, each participant will be eligible to obtain a 2016 WLSL Guinness World Record Holder certificate. As this is Brewer Swimming’s first time supporting the event, we are unsure how many to expect, however, there were 38,170 participants from 22 countries in 2015.

Why is Brewer Swimming so passionate about teaching kids to swim?

Imagine being too frightened to enter a pool or experience diving under waves at the beach? Imagine not having the confidence to join a group of friends enjoying a day on the harbour or snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef? How helpless would you feel not being able to assist someone experiencing difficulty in a pool, river or at the beach because of the inability to swim?

We believe that being able to swim is not only a life-saving skill but a skill for life. Everyone should have the opportunity to learn how to swim for safety, health and enjoyment. Since starting Brewer Swimming at Lane Cove Olympic Pool over 25 years ago, we have loved sharing our passion for water safety and swimming excellence and enjoyed instructing swimmers of all ages and abilities. Our passion is driven by seeing swimmers develop confidence, improve skills, become safe and enjoy being competent in the water to achieve their individual goals. Some of our swimmers have even reached international success.

Brewer Swimming’s mantra of Learn for Safety, Swim for Health, Train for Life states clearly our core values as an esteemed and trusted swimming school provider.

The importance of water competence in Australia cannot be overstated, with an alarming number of young people and adults drowning every year because of their poor swimming ability.

The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson is a timely and practical reminder of the life-saving benefits of aquatic skills. This event promotes and increases public awareness of the relevance of both elementary swimming techniques and regular swimming practice for personal safety, health, and vitality – we had to be involved!

Tell us about the Brewer Swimming story and both Narelle and Graeme’s achievements in swimming

Graeme Brewer

Following a lengthy career in surf lifesaving competition which included Australian Swimming, Ironman and belt Championships, Graeme turned his attention to pool competition and qualified to represent Australia at both the Moscow and Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1980 and 1984, as well as the Commonwealth Games and World Championships in 1978 and 1982. In the swimming pool, winning the 4 x 100m and 4 x 200m relays at the Brisbane 1982 Commonwealth Games were of course significant highlights as a member of the inaugural “Mean Machine”, along with collecting a Bronze medal in his individual 200m Freestyle race in Moscow 1980.

Graeme studied at both UNSW (Civil Engineering), and University of Iowa USA (Sports Administration/Psychology/Physiology) whilst competing internationally, and was Head Swimming Coach at Pymble Ladies’ College (PLC) from 1984 until 2004. Throughout Graeme’s time as the Head Swimming Coach, PLC won 19 out of 20 IGSSA swimming championships. Graeme also formed Willoughby Swim Club in 1990 which continues to thrive as a platinum level club. While Graeme is tackling a new challenge in sunny Noosa with his old coach John Rodgers (JR), he still is highly involved with Brewer Swimming in Sydney and is very excited about helping the team on 24th June 2016!

Narelle Brewer:

Narelle’s involvement in the swimming industry was a new and exciting challenge after 10 years involved in Early Childhood education. Teaching pre-schoolers in remote areas of far north Western Australia and the Northern Territory provided unforgettable challenges and experiences. Following Graeme’s national and international success, their partnership provided them with the knowledge and experience to offer a valuable service to the Lane Cove community.

The Brewer’s long standing relationship with St. Ignatius College, Riverview and management of The Village Pool at Riverside Corporate Park , provide two excellent locations from which to operate their services. We are excited to soon launch Swimming2U as a new convenient service for busy families!

Please join us for the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson on June 24th to increase awareness about the importance of learning to swim to help to reduce drowning deaths all over the world.
