Lane Cove Bush Kids – Fun and Interactive Learning and Play

0

Lane Cove Bush Kids is a local initiative of the Lane Cove Bushland and Conservation Society, a not-for-profit, volunteer-run organisation founded over 40 years ago in Lane Cove to protect Lane Cove’s natural environment.

Lane Cove Bush Kids is designed to increase our local community’s awareness, understanding, and engagement in the natural environment. It does so by providing regular environmental education activities set in local bushland for children and their families. For bush kids activities, priority is given to residents of the Lane Cove council area.

Lane Cove Bush Kids is also about building community, encouraging connections between local families and increasing our knowledge and engagement with the place we live in.

How did Lane Cove Bush Kids evolve?

At the beginning there were three mothers – Corinne Fagueret, Alyson Hayes and Ann Proudfoot – with a strong idea and the passion to bring outdoor learning experiences to children and their families. Under the roof of the Lane Cove Bushland & Conservation Society and with support of the Lane Cove council, the idea soon turned into reality and has been around since 2010.

Most recently, the Lane Cove Bushland & Conservation Society have formed a new partnership with Lane Cove council to run the Lane Cove Bush Kids program for the Lane Cove Community. Council will fund the program for the next two years and has made $32,000 available in the current financial year. The funding will enable the Bush kids program to run during term time.

Lane Cove Bush Kids is designed to increase the local community’s awareness, understanding and engagement in the natural environment. It´s also about building community, encouraging connections between local families and increasing our knowledge and engagement with the place we live in.

What do they do?

They currently run bi-weekly activities for children set in local bushland with different themes and focus depending on the season and location.  Here is a selection of some of the fun activities they have had in 2016. We list Lane Cove Bush Kids events in our events calendar – here are some examples of past events

In addition, the current program will be expanded to provide bushland activities aimed at primary school aged children (6-12 years) during the school holidays. Last School Holidays they held a multicultrual day at the new and exciting Hughes Park playground.

The children and their carer learned about Australian native animals in combination with using the play equipment. An example was learning about Leaf Tailed Geckos and having a go at the climbing wall, as geckos are excellent climbers. Another animal the kids learned about were wombats; the children climbed through the play train tunnel like a wombat in its burrow. They also slid down the slides like a platypus would slide out of its nesting chamber into a river. Active learning, and the children loved it!

They did rubbings using the Hughes Park bollards to have the children run around and find the correct letters to rub to spell ‘Hughes Park’ and finished off with a craft activity creating colourful flowers.
