Bird Watching and Counting in Lane Cove

This week ( 17th to 23rd October) is official Bird Counting Week.  Who knew??  This is your chance to help record the number of birds in Lane Cove.  Anyone can be involved.  Guess what – there is an app for it (of course)!!

Just get comfy in your favourite outdoor space, make sure your eyes are peeled and record what you see for 20 minutes.  Why not make it a family affair?  You can count as many times as you like over the week.  Get your family and friends together and head off into the great outdoors.

Simply record the birds you see on the Aussie Bird Count app or through the Submit a Count tab on the website. You’ll instantly see live statistics on the number of people taking part and the number of birds and species counted in your neighbourhood and the whole of Australia.

Not only will you get to know your feathered neighbours, but you’ll be contributing to a vital pool of information from across the nation that will help us see how Australian birds are faring.

We know that Lane Cove has an amazing range of wildlife.  Here is just a sample of some of the birds spotted in Lane Cove by In the Cove fans.

Then of course, there is the brush turkey (some love them and some hate them) – see more here.

You may be interested to know that the #1 bird from the last two year’s count has been the #RainbowLorikeet. Considered a pest in some states of Australia, it will be interesting to see if it gets knocked off its perch this year.

The organisers are calling on all Australians, even those who don’t consider themselves to be bird watchers, to tell them about the birds they’re seeing in their backyards. They want to hear about all birds, especially the common ones, because it’s the more common species that give them the best indication of the health of the environment.

So go forth and count Lane Cove – you might even tell ITC what the number one bird in Lane Cove is!!!  Every time you submit a count you go into the draw to win a prize.
