Lane Cove Self Defence Workshop for Women and Girls

The Lane Cove Women’s Action & Information Group (WAIG) is encouraging women to take control of their own personal safety by inviting them to attend a Self Defence Workshop for women and for girls aged 16 years and over. The seminar will be led by Penny Gulliver a highly experienced instructor of self defence.

Penny started teaching self defence in 1976. Her work as a sexual assault counsellor showed the urgent need for the development of safety skills to prevent attacks.

Penny is a government accredited coach and is a fifth dan black belt in Kung Fu. She has a Level 1 Referee qualification with the Australian National All Styles and has received a level 2 Referee/Judge qualification with the International Sports karate Association. She is a long standing member of the Federation of Australian Kung Fu (Wu-Shu) Organisations.

Over the last 25 years, Penny has gained vast experience in teaching a diverse range of people. Thousands of students comprising men, women, and children from government departments, the corporate sector, community organisations, schools and individuals have participated in programs conducted by Penny.

Why Should You Attend this Workshop?

Most women have felt vulnerable at some time in their lives either walking home alone at night or when at home with young children, even in daylight hours. For many women, the need to feel safe in their own neighbourhood is of great importance, although we often look outside of ourselves for protection.

According to one of the workshop organisers and WAIG Convenor, Linda Christian, “All women have the right to feel safe when walking home alone from the station or bus stop. There are many simple techniques that we can use to increase our confidence and our ability to defend ourselves should we ever need to. As well as talking with us about the need to feel strong within ourselves, Penny will show us a range of techniques that will help us to defend ourselves or our families. We are encouraging women of all ages, including teenage girls to come along and join in this fun but instructive day.”

What is WAIG?

WAIG originally known as the Lane Cove Women’s Safety Group, was established in 1983 when the women of Lane Cove decided to take responsibility for their own safety following a series of sexual assaults in the area. During this early period, the group organised self-defence courses for women and girls. While WAIG’s activities have diversified over the years to include weekly discussion groups on a range of topics, book groups and annual seminars, WAIG will again offer this one-off Self Defence seminar for women.
