Aquatic Natal Hydrotherapy classes at Lane Cove Physio are a Huge Hit

Lane Cove Physio offers Aquatic Natal (hydrotherapy) classes for pregnancy!  Facilitated by a trained physiotherapist with a special interest in Women’s Health, classes are conducted in a beautifully warm 35 degree indoor hydrotherapy pool. Lane Cove Physio have private change rooms, a plethora of equipment and state of the art facilities.

Hydrotherapy for pregnancy is a fantastic way for expecting mums to enjoy the benefits of exercise in a safe, weight-reduced and relaxed environment. The class includes a series of strengthening and cardio exercises specific for pregnancy. With no more than 6 participants per class, exercises are personalised to the abilities of the participants.

It has been recommended by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (2015) that women with uncomplicated pregnancies should engage in at least 20-30mins exercise per day on most, if not all days. Physical activity in pregnancy has minimal risks and has been shown to benefit most women.

Benefits of Aquatic Natal classes include:

  • Improving or maintaining physical fitness
  • Weight management, improving circulation, fluid retention and swelling
  • Reducing and managing pregnancy-related back and pelvic pain
  • Reducing the risk of gestational diabetes in some populations
  • Assisting in controlling blood pressure
  • Enhancing psychological wellbeing
  • Promoting relaxation and improving sleep
  • Meet other mums-to-be

First class is FREE! Try it out with no obligations. Private health fund rebates are available thereafter.

A simple screening test prior to entering the pool is essential for safety purposes and if you are at risk, you may need to get a letter of clearance from your doctor.

Pregnancy massage and women’s health physiotherapy (pelvic floor assessment and treatment post partum) are also available.

Local Mum Nat loved the Aquatic Natal Hydro classes when she was pregnant.  We asked her a few questions about the classes

What made you attend the classes?

I went because, as is common in pregnancy, I was experiencing hip pain. My obstetrician recommended that I see a physio to help with the pain and ensure I wasn’t doing any damage. I saw Ashley and she suggested attending the hydro class in conjunction with some treatments.

What was the experience like?

Being in the pool feels totally amazing! The class involves a workout that is tailored for pregnancy so you know that the exercises you’re doing are safe. You’re closely supervised and you can work at a level you are comfortable with. Being able to exercise free from pain and the extra weight of pregnancy was awesome and I left every session already anticipating the next one.

Would you recommend it to other pregnant mums?

I absolutely would and I have already sent a couple of friends along, and they love it too. It is a great way to exercise without the impact on your body and incorporates some strength and some cardiovascular all the while being mindful of the pregnant body. There is also the social aspect of being able to chat with other mums to be. I would recommend it to any pregnant person as an exercise option.

Was it relaxing?

So RELAXING! I joked that I need a hydro pool at my place. Maybe I wasn’t joking! Being 35 degrees and ozone rather than chlorine it is literally like a giant bath.
