Want to cut your waste in half? Or you might be looking at reducing your carbon footprint. Teach your children about the circle of life by composting. It’s time to join the compost revolution. It’s International Composting Week from 7 – 13th May 2017. Yes, a full week all about composting!!
To celebrate this week, Lane Cove Council has invited eco-expert Pete Rutherford to host a workshop explaining the ins and outs of how to set up a thriving compost or worm farm. Peter is a social ecologist, horticulturist, and educator with an extensive knowledge of soils and microbes and the sciences of composting and worm farming. Peter is all about sustainable living. If setting up a compost/worm farm is something you’re keen to learn more about, this is the perfect opportunity!
The workshop is on 6 May at 10.00 am to 1.00 pm – you can find out how to book the event here. The event will be held at the PermaPatch Community Garden (Behind the Uniting Church, Corner of Mowbray Road and Pacific Highway).
Bookings are essential and priority will be given to those who haven’t previously attended a Compost Workshop.
If you can’t make the event you can still get into composting!! There are lots of good reasons to compost. Composting is a way to save resources, save money and improve the quality of your soil.
Adding compost to your garden will not only fertilize, it actually feeds your soil with a diversity of nutrients and microorganisms that will improve plant growth. Chemical fertilizers, on the other hand, provide a quick burst of a limited number of nutrients that can wash away into our rivers and streams. Compost also increases soil stability, improves drainage and helps retain moisture.
How do you save money?
- No need to go to Bunnings and buy chemical fertiliser (unless of course, you want lunch on a weekend – in which case go to Bunnings but save on the cost of chemical fertilisers). Compost is free!
- Reduce your excess water bill, when you use compost in the garden it retains soil moisture so you water less.
- The nutrients from compost are not washed away by rainfall. No waste!
Why do you save the environment?
- You food waste does not go to landfill.
- Waste less water since – you never know when the next drought will occur.
- Reduce council costs for waste collection and thereby reduce fuel use.
Lane Cove Council has partnered with Compost Revolution to make it easier for the community to learn how to compost and worm farm by offering online tutorials. The added bonus is that after completing the online tutorial and associated quiz you will be entitled to receive a free compost bin or worm farm, you just need to pay a small delivery charge. This programme has been so successful that Lane Cove Council has exhausted their allocation of funds for this financial year (2016/2017). However the revolution will start up again in July 2017, just send an email to [email protected] and you’ll be the first on the list to grab your bin or farm in July!
