HEART-WRENCHING, FUNNY, HONEST AUSSIE PLAY FOR NEW SYDNEY PRODUCTION

Lane Cove Theatre Company presents Tommy Murphy’s Holding the Man 11-26 August

Hot on the heels of its acclaimed productions of Cosi, Away, The Last Five Years and the Vagina Monologues, Lane Cove Theatre Company presents the famous, powerful Australian story of love, loss and the AIDS pandemic: HOLDING THE MAN.

Based on Timothy Conigrave’s celebrated memoir of the same name, Tommy Murphy’s award-winning play is a breathtakingly honest, achingly funny and completely heart-wrenching account of a 15-year relationship that weathered disapproval, separation, temptation and, ultimately, death.  It is a story – and a celebration – that speaks across generations, sexual preference and cultures.

The course of true love rarely runs smooth, but it is a white-water adventure if you are secretly gay in an all-boys school in 1970’s Melbourne… with a crush on the captain of the football team. Against all odds, Tim and John develop a relationship that for fifteen years, survives everything life throws at them-the temptations, the separations, the discriminations, the jealousies and the losses — until the only problem that love can’t solve turns up to tear them apart.

Holding the Man paints a raw, gritty and intimate picture that faithfully captures Timothy Conigrave’s book, but also succeeds in transforming it into a unique theatrical experience that is wholly his own.

“Compelling, wrenching … unflinching, devastating, moving and funny” – Sydney Morning Herald

“Tommy Murphy is a bewitching playwright of startling originality” – Cate Blanchett & Andrew Upton

Directed by Kathryn Thomas, the cast features Brent Dolahenty and Wayne Buckley with Isaac Downey, Hannah Lehmann, Bec Leedham and Trent Gardiner.

The play depicts the hardship of an extremely important time period within queer society, says Thomas.

“I am a big believer in theatre being a motivator for social change and Holding the Man does that in so many aspects. The story of Tim and John’s relationship is a landmark in Australian social history.”
