Lane Cove Local Luke Harriss is Called Up by Steve Waugh

When you get called by Steve Waugh and asked to go on his team, you can’t say no.  Local business owner Luke Harriss from the Unwined Bar was called up a few years ago to join Steve Waugh on his Captain’s Ride

Luke has now been riding the Captain’s Ride for three years and this year the Captain’s Ride started in Toowoomba.  Day one was a gruelling 130 km in 36 Degree heat.  The course is takes in some very hilly areas around south east Queensland over six gruelling days.

What is the Captain’s Ride?

The Captain’s Ride is about people from all walks of life leading, inspiring, supporting and guiding each other. One of the key objectives is to foster a sense of camaraderie and teamwork amongst riders, provide a challenge that tests the riders both mentally and physically both on and off the bike; and to create an experience that provides lifelong memories. The significant and symbolic route is mapped out specially to meet the objectives of a life changing experience and fundraiser.

Each rider must make a significant commitment in terms of fundraising, time and plenty of training.  Luke must raise $10 000.  You can help Luke by donating here.

What Does the Captain’s Ride Raise Money for?

Steve Waugh and his foundation raise money for over 400,000 children who have rare diseases. These rare diseases do not receive government funding and do not have the resources to raise funds.  It is estimated that there are between 6000 and 8000 rare diseases which need funding for research and patient support.

Why did Luke Harriss Become Involved?

Luke loves his cricket.  Between 1998 and 2003 Luke was the net bowler and bag boy for the Australian Cricket Team.  During this time he got to know Steve Waugh and they have kept in touch.  Those of you who know Luke know that he does have the strength of character to make the ride.  Luke has been an amazing supporter of In the Cove and each year supports us by advertising and providing competition prizes.  You may not know that Luke is also a very talented musician.  His band Gas plays at local parties and is very much in demand for local 40, 50 and 60th birthday parties.
