Travel Tips from a Lane Cove Expert – Christmas in Lapland anyone?

ITC has put together an amazing team of local experts to help make your life in Lane Cove just that bit easier. We are so excited to have travel guru Adrienne Witteman from Trendsetter Travel and Cruises on board as our travel expert.

We asked Adrienne to let us know what would be a fun thing to do this Christmas. Adrienne suggested Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland.  Read this blog by Adrienne to find out why!!!

Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland is home to Santa Claus’ Village, and all his elves. Yes you really do feel like it’s Christmas in this wonderland of cute Scandinavian wood cabins that offer shops (of course), workshops where the elves craft their goods and of course, Santa Claus resplendent on his thrown. If you’re lucky it might snow but it will definitely be cold enough to wear your thermals, a hat and mittens.

The town of Rovaniemi offers plentiful accommodation to suit all budgets and of course December is peak time but a room at Santa’s Hotel will cost under $1000.00 for 3 nights including breakfast, ensuring there’s some left over for all the other wintry activities.

Husky dogsledding, and a reindeer farm visit, excite every age group while enjoying a sauna (pronounced SOW NA) in the buff and en famille is a very Finnish thing to do. You might prefer to wear your swimmers but try to follow up your sauna with a dip in an icy lake for a truly exhilarating experience. Best of all, and free, is a Northern Lights show but you have to be lucky.

What’s there to eat and drink? As you might expect, reindeer features frequently on menus. Other foods you might like to try are blood sausage, fried cheese, smoked salmon and blinis, lingonberries, herring, garlic soups and lots of delicious breads. Food is hearty, particularly in winter. Vodka is the spirit of choice but during daytime you’ll appreciate a steaming cup of coffee from one of the many cafes.

If you want to widen your experience: head north to Saariselka for an igloo experience. More comfortable than you might imagine and providing a memory to last a lifetime.
