Welcome to our Lane Cove Week in Review for 11 to 17 December 2017.

Gas Leak in Plaza

At 7.32am on Sunday 17th December a gas leak was discovered on Longueville Road between Birdwood Avenue and Central Avenue.  As a precaution, 10 people were evacuated.  The Gas Authorities discovered that a pipe under Longueville Road had ruptured.  As at 8.00 pm today the road was still closed.

Fiesty Council Meeting

It was a feisty council meeting on Monday 11th December 2017 when the RMS presented a plan to introduce clearways on Burns Bay Road and Centennial Avenue Lane Cove.  You can read more about the proposal here.

Lane Cove Council resolved to ask Roads and Maritime Services to:-

Provide justification for the proposed clearway operation hours on Centennial Avenue and Burns Bay Road between Epping Road, Lane Cove and Victoria Road, Huntleys Point;

Provide justification for the loss of open space by adding a longer left turn slip lane in Centennial Avenue northbound.

Extend the community consultation period until 28 February 2018, considering the Christmas and school holiday period.

It was further resolved that the Lane Cove Council General Manager seek an urgent meeting with the Chief Executive Officer of the Roads and Maritime Services and the Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight the Hon. Melinda Pavey.

A petition was tabled by Paul Clarke including approximately 110 signatures, expressing concerns about the RMS proposals.

Refugee Welcome Zone

Lane Cove Councillors Andrew Zbik and Karola Brent introduced a motion for the Lane Cove Council to sign a pledge provided by the Refugee Council of Australia to become a Refugee Welcome Zone.   The resolution was passed with 5 Councillors voting yes and 2 Councillors voting no.

It was further resolved that Lane Cove Council demonstrate a commitment to the pledge by exploring opportunities to organise and coordinate with local community groups already working with refugees to hold an event or a series of events during Refugee Week (17-23 June 2018) or at another time deemed appropriate by Council. The objective of the events would be to help educate and raise awareness around the challenges people who have recently arrived in Australia face when settling into our community and celebrate the contribution they have made to Australian society.

It was also resolved to explore the opportunity to develop a work experience position at Lane Cove Council for a student who has recently arrived in Australia. The objective of the position would be to help them to develop the literacy and numeracy skills to help them give back to the Lane Cove community and to help build their skill set to prepare them for gainful employment in the private or public sectors.

Mowbray Public School

Willoughby Council has agreed to install five light towers on the Mowbray Public School oval. The towers, each 18m high, will mean the oval will be able to be used in the evenings from 6 pm to 9 pm.

The lights are to be used for training by Mowbray Public School  sporting teams and other community sporting teams on weeknights and special school events on weekends.

This is good news for the Chatswood Rangers Soccer Club as this is their home field.

ITC Celebrates 10,000 Facebook Followers!!

Thank you to those lovely people who came and saw us at the Lane Cove Plaza on Saturday morning.  Your good wishes and lovely comments were so appreciated.  Also a big special thank you to those people who also dropped in toys, books and games for ITC to deliver to Delvena Women’s Refuge.

Delvena Women’s Refuge Needs Your Help

Delvena would so appreciate if you could donate Christmas gifts (toys and books) for the children who are currently in the Refuge or rehoused in the Lane Cove Area. Please donate brand new toys/books. They would love some more, gender non- specific gifts as they always receive more girl gifts than boys. The gifts can be delivered to Sydney Community Services in Little Street Lane Cove (the building with the car park across the road from the pool – during business hours)  You can read about the good work Delvena does in our article here.

Pop Up Band

The Turrumburra Concert Band, from Lane Cove Concert Band popped up this week in different places.  They were a hit at Woolies.

Summer Storms

We are in summer storm season and some of the recent storms have been quite fierce.  The tree below came down on the road just across from one of the most popular decorated houses in Lane Cove (at the corner of Yallambie Road and Barina Avenue Riverview).

If you do experience storm damage, contact the SES.  You can read more about our wonderful local SES here.  It might be a good idea to get storm ready and we have some tips from the Ausgrid here.

Give the GIFT of ITC this Christmas

ITC is looking forward to 2018 and to providing even more timely and relevant information to Lane Cove.

Many people still think ITC is only available on Facebook. If you have a friend that wants to be kept up to date but is not on Facebook, they can subscribe to our newsletter or visit our website.

ITC is a hyperlocal site. After researching hyperlocal sites all around the world and visiting with the Centre for Community Journalism in Cardiff, ITC has discovered some very interesting hyperlocal trends.

Many hyperlocal sites like ITC fold after five years. This is due to burnout and lack of funds. Hyperlocal sites that survive and flourish are the ones that accept both advertising and membership subscriptions. ITC has introduced a membership program to make ITC even better and to allow us to increase our staff and resources. Membership is also in response to the many people who have thanked ITC and asked how they can help support our community work.

All it costs is a one-off subscription fee of $50. In addition to a warm and fuzzy feeling, you’ll also get this stuff:

DEALS & DISCOUNTS

Both big and small businesses approach us with exclusive offers that we will pass along to ITC members via a members’ only monthly newsletter.

MEMBER MEETUPS

Super casual meetups (think happy hour) in which we can nerd out about Lane Cove news and the ITC team can get your feedback on what we can do better to serve you.

SOFT T-SHIRT

In the Cove #Roving Reporter T-shirt (allow 30 days for delivery). This is only available to ITC members.

OTHER SURPRISES

We will look for other ways to surprise and delight our members.

In the Cove will continue to be free and accessible to all our followers and we thank every one of you. We appreciate that not all our followers will become members, and that’s okay! That said, we do believe it’s important to develop a deeper relationship with those that find value in what we do. If you would like to apply for an ITC membership just click here.

New Range of Tea Towels Introduced

You asked for it and ITC has done it. We now have Northwood, Longueville, Riverview Tea Towels (as well as Greenwich and Lane Cove).

All you need to do is either email ITC or hit the Shop Now button on our Facebook Page.
Northwood is sold out. There are only very limited supplies of Riverview and Longueville.
If they sell out we can’t guarantee that we will be able to order any more before Christmas.

The good news is that you can buy Lane Cove and Greenwich Tea Towels at The Burns Bay Bookery and you can buy Greenwich Tea Towels at the Greenwich IGA.

Shop Local This Christmas

We are encouraging all Lane Cove residents to shop local and support our local businesses.  ITC has been shopping up a storm. Check out our Christmas Gift Guides for some local gift ideas.
