Lane Cove Council Free Workshop For Parents and Supervisors of Learner Drivers

Lane Cove Council regularly conducts free workshops for parents and supervisors of learner drivers. The workshops offer parents and supervisors practical advice on how to help learner drivers become safer drivers.

The course covers topics such as how to use the Learner Driver Log Book, how to plan driving sessions, how to deal with difficulties that may arise during driving practice and the importance of giving the learner constructive feedback.

There has been very positive feedback to the Lane Cove Council’s workshops. Parents and supervisors who have attended the workshop have stated that the workshop boosted their confidence, helped them better plan driving sessions and allowed them to share experiences with other parents and supervisors.

On 20 November 2017, there were changes to the graduated licensing scheme (GLS) for learner P1 and P2 drivers. Learner drivers will now be required to complete a Hazard Perception Test before undertaking the practical driving test.

Since the introduction of the GLS in  2000, there has been a 50 per cent reduction in the number of young drivers killed on its roads in NSW – However, younger drivers continue to be overrepresented in road deaths and trauma.

P-platers make up 8.0 per cent of all driver licence holders, yet their crashes account for 15 per cent of all fatalities on NSW roads.

learner driver

Lane Cove local mum, Cath Pagett (a mother of teenage twins), spoke to In the Cove about her teaching teenagers to drive experience.  She highly recommends the Keys 2 Drive programme. She also recommends giving your children a couple of hours driving instruction in quite streets, before you employ a professional instructor. She believes the most important thing you can teach your child is to respect the process and to understand that you not only only hold your life in your hands, but the lives of others.

If you want to find out about how to obtain a learner driver permit, it is all set out on the Roads and Maritime website here.
