Lane Cove Week in Review 18th to 24th February 2018

Phew, what a big week in Lane Cove!!

    Lane Cove Council Meeting

On Monday night, the Lane Cove Council held its first meeting of 2018.  The two hottest agenda items were the clearways on Centennial Avenue and the St Leonards South Master Plan.

The Lane Cove Council is seeking an urgent meeting with the Premiere to discuss the proposed clearways on Centennial Avenue.  LCC will also undertake its own vehicle counts.  Residents are not happy that clearways are planned from 9 AM to 6 PM on weekends and during peak hours on both sides during the week.

Greenwich Residents made their voices heard over the St Leonards South Master Plan. A change of zoning for the area from R2 Low-Density Residential to R4 High-Density Residential is being planned.  If the rezoning goes ahead, 2,400 units will be constructed. This will add at a minimum 4,800 new residents, noting that Greenwich’s current population is just over 5,000.  The meeting got quite heated with at one stage one councillor calling for a transcript of the tapes so he could review the comments for a possible defamation action.

    Vandalism in Sutherland Street

On Friday, residents of Sutherland Street awoke to acts of vandalism.  Graffiti was all over a house fence and several cars.  Police are appealing for anyone with CCTV in Sutherland Street to contact Chatswood Police Station.

    World Premiere

The Lane Cove Theatre Company kicked off their 2018 season with a local Lane Cove original musical play. Vicki, by Rodney Ivan Stewart (Devil May Care) is about four survivors of a nuclear attack – a poet, a painter, a scientist and a robot. They discuss art, science, logic, love, lust, feelings, reason and yes, a nuclear explosion during three weeks of zany, serious and amusing living together in a nuclear fall-out shelter.  The Sydney Arts Guide review finished with the following words:

So I add my voice to the program plea for a Lane Cove performing arts space … as I did when I saw the company’s GODSPELL in 2015. Come-on get to it!  Lane Cove Theatre Company, and that reprise at the finale, ‘Back in the World’, shows why live theatre is so important to community.  It sends one out into the world with a smile, a song ringing in the ears and the need to chat to strangers.  Exactly what we need in a time of threat and isolation.

Fire in Lane Cove Apartment Block

On Thursday night, sirens were going off in Lane Cove.  It turns out an incense stick left unattended caused a fire in an apartment, fire crews put out the blaze and residents returned to the building around midnight.

False Alarm at Lane Cove Market Square

Several times this week Lane Cove Market Square shops and the North Shore Gym were evacuated due to fire alarms being triggered.  At least once incident occurred due to a fire door being opened.

    Police Report and Incidents

On Wednesday, Longueville Road (near the library) was packed with 3 ambulances 1 fire truck and 3 police cars all with sirens blaring.  They were called to a four-car accident, when in fact it was a minor accident with no injuries – understandably they were not impressed.

You guessed it another accident at Longueville Road and River Road West (aka The Diddy corner) this week.  ITC is continuing to put pressure on the RMS.

There were also attempted car break-ins in Grace Street Lane Cove, Penrose Street and two at Linley Point.

This week, Police were advised of strange behavior on Tantallon Street and Johnson Street.  A lady in her 60’s (dressed in PJ’s) and a man in his 80’s were seen taking photos of houses and their doors in these streets.  Make sure you lock your door and windows.
