2019 Melbourne Cup In Lane Cove

Melbourne Cup is on Tuesday, the 5th of November 2019.

It is the race that stops a nation. Well, maybe it used to when it was run at around 2.45pm (back in the day), but a 3pm race time means school pick-up time for many and an interruption to those champagne focused festivities.

That said, just being a part of the Melbourne Cup hype is fun, and a great excuse to get together with a group of friends for lunch, gossip, and to show off your new fascinator.

Big Screen at Lane Cove Plaza

You can view the race that stops a nation on the big screen in Lane Cove Plaza. All the action from 2pm.

Catering

Are you holding an event at home?  Why not get one of our local caterers to help you out.  Here is an idea from A Cut Above Catering.

This recipe is also delicious with Salmon. A good idea for Melb Cup is to serve this salad on a big platter garnished with lots of fresh herbs & lime wedges. Provide noodle boxes for guests to serve themselves. Easy to eat while standing up & no washing up.  Recipe here.

Chargrill Charlie’s

Planning a Melbourne Cup lunch at home or at the office?. Please contact the Lane Cove store to order on (02) 8095 9761.

Dapper Men

Gazman is the place to go for stylish outfits for Melbourne Cup this year.  Tailoring is the cornerstone to race day dressing and that means a blazer is essential. A linen blend is ideal, thanks to its breathability and lightweight finish. Plus, you can layer it up easily without the unnecessary bulk. Neutral colours like beige and grey spell out spring, but you can’t go wrong with a classic navy blazer either.  Read more hints here.

Look Beautiful

Make sure you book early at your hairdresser – if you don’t have a local hairdresser then we have some great ones listed in our business directory.

Plenty of free parking on site so you can dash in and out with ease – phone 9420 8880 for appointments (please note the salon will be closed on Melbourne Cup Day).

Pick a Winner?

In Lane Cove we have a Melbourne Cup Expert called MelbourneCupMax (read more here).

Do YOU have an omen or a superstition relative to racing or the Melbourne Cup?  (This article could be your Melbourne Cup omen!) Riverview resident, Max Hitchins, knows a lot about racing omens and superstitions.

Max is known around Australia as MelbourneCupMax. Possibly because his Melbourne Cup system for selecting the Cup winner has worked for 26 out of the last 31 years. Possibly because he has memorised the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place-getters for the last 100 100 Melbourne Cups. (Click here to see him tested on Channel 9).

Between now and Melbourne Cup Day, on the 5th of November, Max is going to share some ‘racing omens and superstition’ stories with ITC.   And….if you have a racing omen or superstition it could win you a special prize.  (See below).  Take it away Max…

My Dad, Ernie Hitchins, was a bookmaker in the northern NSW town of Moree.  Every Saturday, when he fielded at the various race meetings around the area, he always wore his special felt hat – for luck.  There was a lot of stress in our house on Saturdays if my Dad could not find his lucky hat!

A very intelligent lawyer friend swore by this system he ‘discovered’.  It was simple.  You bet on the the horse with the same number saddlecloth as the race number.  Eg. In Race 1 he backed #1.  In Race 2 he backed #2. etc. etc.  I was with him one day when, using this system and betting in a pub on a trotting meeting, he backed the winner #8 in Race 8 at the price of $88. He also had a ‘back up system’ if the horse horse chosen was scratched from the race.  Eg. If #8 was scratched in Race 8 he substituted the horse in Barrier #8.   (Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear!)

A bookmaker’s wife we know always has to look at horses in the mounting yard before each race. If any horse looks at her and nods its’ head she believes that is ‘a sign’ to back that horse.

A friend, who regularly goes to Randwick races in Sydney, believes he ‘must’ stand in a certain place in the stand otherwise his chosen horse will have no chance of winning.  I’ve seen him gently shove old ladies out of the way if they are standing in his ‘lucky’ spot.

World renowned jockey, Frankie Dettori, who will be riding Master of Reality in the Melbourne Cup, likes to put white tape on his saddle before a big race when riding in the UK.  Wonder if he will do it in the Melbourne Cup?

Many people will not bet on the horse drawn in Gate #18 in the Melbourne Cup. This gate is considered ‘unlucky’ as no horse has ever won from Gate #18. It is the only barrier that has never been successful.
