2066 Lane Cove Litter Challenge

The Lane Cove Council has come up with a fun challenge for Plastic Free July.  The ITC family is joining in and we would love you to do so as well.  It is called the 2066 Litter Challenge.  Lane Cove Council are aiming to remove 2,066 pieces of litter from the Lane Cove Local Government Area.

Plastic Free July aims to raise awareness of the problems and amount of single-use disposable plastic in our lives and challenges people to do something about it.

    How Does It Work?

Pick up litter from 1 – 31 July 2022 then log how many items you collected. Lane Cove gift vouchers, to the value of $100*, will be awarded for:

    • The most items picked up by an individual
    • The most items picked up by a group or family
    • The most unusual item found

*The winners will be announced in August. Maximum of one prize per residential address. Maximum prize pool of $300. Open to Lane Cove LGA residents only.

Please make sure to observe the current recommendations of NSW Health including social distancing and staying at home if you are feeling unwell.

Lane Cove Council would love you to share any ‘before and after’ images of the area you cleaned, or images of litter collected to inspire others to make a difference too. Please post before and after photos on Instagram with #2066LitterChallenge and tag @lanecovecouncil or email your photos to [email protected].

    Why remove litter?

Litter is an eyesore and removing it keeps our neighbourhood beautiful. Litter can negatively impact your sense of community and make people feel less safe. By picking it up, you’re showing pride for your community and beautifying the area. Also, it protects wildlife. Animals can confuse litter for food or nesting materials. If litter gets into waterways, chances are it’ll harm aquatic ecosystems as well. Picking up litter helps prevent wildlife from chancing upon it. Finally, picking up litter creates a ‘new normal’. What you’ll notice is, as you are picking up litter you will inspire other people to pick up litter too.

So c’mon, join the 2066 Litter Challenge this July and make a difference to our environment.

    Things to remember:

When you are picking up litter consider taking these items with you:

    • A mobile phone in case of an emergency.
    • A pair of tongs and heavy-duty gloves to remove sharp objects.
    • Buckets, extra gloves and rakes.
    • Drinking water and refreshments.
    • Sunscreen and a hat.
    • Wear enclosed shoes.

Please ensure you take adequate precautions to ensure your own safety and the safety of those around you.

Do not handle syringes. If you see a syringe, inform Council.

Do not handle any item you are unsure about.

If you require bags, gloves, litter pickers or buckets please contact Councils Sustainability Coordinator.

Well done Lane Cove Council.  This is a terrific way to inspire people to pick up rubbish and make Lane Cove a cleaner place.
