Lane Cove Yearly Crime Stats and Trends

The Bureau of Crime Statistics and Reports (BOSCAR) produces a quarterly and annual report series examining trends in crime reported to or detected by, the NSW Police Force. These reports focus on statistical trends across 24 months. The data were extracted from the Computerised Operational Policing System of the NSW Police Force.

In NSW the 24 months to June 2021 one of the 17 major crime categories was trending upwards, six were trending downwards and the remaining ten were stable.  The offences trending downwards were:

  • Break and enter dwelling – Down 16.6%
  • Motor vehicle theft – Down 8.6%
  • Steal from retail store – Down 13.9%
  • Steal from dwelling – Down 9.8%
  • Steal from person – Down 28.4%
  • Fraud – Down 11.5%

The only major offence to show a significant upward trend in the 24 months to June 2021 was sexual assault. Recorded incidents of sexual assault rose 21.0 % year-on-year to June 2021 (up 1,367 incidents).

Commenting on the findings, BOCSAR Executive Director, Jackie Fitzgerald, expects that in the time since this data was collected, crime trends will have been significantly impacted by the current COVID lockdown.  “We know from 2020 that stay at home orders interrupt criminal activity and lead to sharp falls in many crimes. The impact of the most recent restrictions will be closely monitored in the coming months as NSW residents gradually resume regular activities”

Property Crime Rose in 2019

If you’re an avid reader of In the Cove’s week in review, you will have noticed an increase in the number of car thefts reported.

A study by the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research released in 2019 has found that increasing police numbers can reduce crime, but not necessarily through the apprehension of more offenders.

The study found that a 1% increase in the size of the police force generated:

  • a 0.8% reduction in theft;
  • a 1.1% reduction in car theft;
  • no convincing reductions in other crimes.

The study found no change in arrest rates following the increase in police numbers. This indicates that, in this case, police reduced theft and motor vehicle theft primarily through deterring offenders from committing crime rather than through incapacitation.

Report Crime

Lane Cove Residents need to report all incidents to police.  By reporting incidents, this helps police monitor patterns and trends.  Read more here as to how you can quickly report a police matter.
