Lane Cove Public School is hosting a Multicultural Belonging Day onsite on Saturday the 6th of December and is inviting the Lane Cove community to join the celebration of the cultural diversity.
Held in collaboration between the LCPS P&C and Sydney Multicultural Community Services (SMCS), the event brings together families, volunteers, community groups and local organisations for a day of food, music, performances, art and cultural connection.
For Hajar, who has spent years nurturing intercultural understanding at LCPS as the Lane Cove Public School’s Multicultural Liaison, this event is about more than celebration – it’s about creating a tangible sense of belonging for students and families from every background.
How the Idea Was Born
Every year, the LCPS P&C runs a packed calendar of volunteer-led community events such as the Welcome BBQ, various fundraising activities and of course the vibrant World Food Fair, which Hajar co-led and which drew more than 150 parent and grandparent volunteers.
Sydney Multicultural Community Services, who have been part of the World Food Fair since 2023, approached Hajar earlier this year with an idea: a joint end-of-year event focused on cultural inclusion and community connection.
What “Belonging” Means to Hajar
As a migrant herself, and a parent at LCPS, Hajar’s commitment to multicultural representation is deeply personal.
To her, belonging means “caring about the people around you, even if you don’t know them personally, and feeling connected to the neighbourhood and environment you live in.”

Events like this allow students to see their culture and heritage celebrated — and to discover the beauty of cultures different from their own.
Her goal is simple but powerful:
to show children that there is more than one way of eating, dressing, speaking and living — and that all those ways are valid and beautiful.
What to Expect on the Day
The program is a vibrant snapshot of Lane Cove’s multicultural community. Highlights include:
- Music by Joseph, the beloved LCPS music teacher who sings in 14 languages

Supporting New Migrants
One of SMCS’s core missions is helping newly arrived migrants settle in Sydney. This event provides them with:
- A welcoming, relaxed space to meet locals
- Opportunities to connect with services
- A chance to feel part of the LC community
- Access to job-seeker support information
Hajar hopes it will help new families build confidence and forge meaningful connections.
The Volunteer Spirit
For Hajar, the most rewarding part has been working alongside generous, enthusiastic LCPS parents, many of whom step up time and time again to ensure these events succeed.
Their involvement — from baking to stall setup to cultural displays — is a reminder that Lane Cove thrives on community-led contribution.
Looking Ahead
Hajar hopes that this is the beginning of a new tradition — one that continues to evolve and grow each year.
With Lane Cove’s cultural diversity increasing and community partnerships strengthening, Multicultural Belonging Day has all the makings of a beloved annual school event.
