Artist led meditation: Aryadharma meditation
Metta Bhavana – loving kindness
No experience needed
Donations welcome (proceeds go to Sydney Buddhist Centre)
The original name of this practice is metta bhavana, which comes from the Pali language. Metta means ‘love’ (in a non-romantic sense), friendliness, or kindness: hence ‘loving-kindness’ for short. It is an emotion, something you feel in your heart. Bhavana means development or cultivation. So this meditation practice focuses on cultivating loving-kindness.
About Aryadharma Aaron Mathieson:
Aryadharma Aaron Matheson is of Caucasian descent, born in Australia and raised subsequently in England. Aged 16, Aryadharma heard a school friend in art class mention the book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, and decided he was a Buddhist. After completing an art degree in 1999, he moved into a Buddhist community and worked in the London Buddhist Centre for a number of years.
Aryadharma was ordained in 2014 after much exploration and meanderings, including a year at the Royal Drawing School and getting to know his estranged artist father in Australia. Aryadharma’s ordination took place under the auspices of Triratna, a ‘Western’ movement of Buddhism that was founded by Urgyen Sangharakshita in 1968. Aryadharma has a Masters in Fine Art from National Art School Sydney, 2018, and now lives, paints and practices in Marrickville and Newtown, NSW. He is represented by Liverpool St Gallery.
