SUMMARY:Tannery Creek Habitat Walk
DESCRIPTION:Lane Cove Council invites bushland lovers to explore the forest habitat of Tannery Creek on Saturday 17 October\, guided by an owl expert from the Powerful Owl Project. The walk takes in Burns Bay Reserve in Riverview\, where lillypillies\, tree ferns and stunning Red Gums line the creek. \nPossums\, scrub-wrens and even the threatened Powerful Owl make use of the reserve. Walkers will learn how urban green corridors like this one help owls and other native species survive in a busy city. \nThe walk runs from 9:30am to 11:00am and is suitable for ages 10 and over. It is free\, but bookings are essential as spaces are limited.

SUMMARY:Ventemans Reach and Lovetts Reserve Guided Bushwalks
DESCRIPTION:Lane Cove Bushland & Conservation Society leads guided walks through two very different local ecologies on Sunday 20 September\, with expert guides identifying native plants and sharing the history of the area along the way.\n\nThe 9am Ventemans Reach walk heads down to the river through sandstone woodland\, crossing a boardwalk to reach the most extensive and diverse wetland community in Lane Cove\, with views over sedge marshes and mangroves. The 11am Lovetts Reserve walk climbs the ridge south of Blackman Park for expansive river views\, passing mossy sandstone cliffs\, sundews and beautiful sandstone vegetation.\n\nEach walk runs 1.5 hours and can be booked separately\, though the Society recommends both to compare the river flats with the drier hillside. Both walks return to Blackman Park\, where there’s a short break with toilets and picnic facilities before the second walk begins.

SUMMARY:Secret Life of Microbats: Bats in Backyards
DESCRIPTION:Microbats are elusive. Their small size\, nocturnal habits and cryptic roosting mean they’re rarely seen\, yet these insect-eating bats live in all kinds of habitats\, from waterways and bushland to city parks and backyard gardens. Half of the 34 microbat species found in NSW are under threat.\n\nJoin the Bats in Backyards Project Officer online on Thursday 17 September for a look at microbat ecology and what residents can do to help protect them. The Bats in Backyards project relies on citizen scientists to help identify insect-eating bats on their property\, building knowledge of these cryptic threatened species.\nFree event\, held via Zoom. Bookings essential\, with a link emailed on registration.

SUMMARY:Urban Rewilding Project
DESCRIPTION:It takes a village: hear how ecology\, genetics and sociology come together in an urban rewilding project restoring a native bush rat to bushland tucked among northern Sydney’s buildings. Urban rewilding goes beyond planting trees\, aiming to bring back viable populations of native animals that are common regionally but locally missing.\nThree University of Sydney PhD candidates\, Mareshell Wauchope\, Bonita Mendel and Valentina Miriam Cittati\, share insights from this ambitious local initiative involving the bogul (Dharug for bush rat)\, on Wednesday 9 September at Chatswood Library.
