Dance Spanish Lady: Contagion, Lane Cove and Spanish Influenza 1918-1919
30 April 2019 @ 6:15 pm - 8:00 pm
The Spanish Influenza pandemic of 1918-1919 killed some 50 to 100 million people worldwide. It also became known as the Spanish Lady, ‘prostitute, free with her favours, and infecting everybody at the same time’. It arrived in Lane Cove in early 1919 and killed at least two locals with numerous others falling victim to the virus. Naomi Bassford, Local Studies Coordinator will discuss the pandemic, Lane Cove’ s response and the effects it had in the local community.
