History Talk @ Lane Cove Library Saving the Rats of Tobruk: HMAS Waterhen & The Scrap Iron Flotilla The Royal Australian Navy saw heavy action against the Axis powers in the Mediterranean during World War II. Derisively called the ‘Scrap Iron Flotilla’ by Joseph Goebbels, five World War I RAN destroyers became the ‘Tobruk Ferry Service’ providing a crucial lifeline for Australian and Allied troops holding Tobruk during 1941.
