As the Soviet Union began to collapse in late 1991, several of the Balkan states began to fight for independence and self-rule. Some of these conflicts resulted in the intervention of United Nations peacekeepers.
Major Andrew (Andy) Brayshaw (retired) is an Army veteran with 43 years of military service behind him. 24 of those years were spent as a Combat Medic in the British and Australian Army. He was seconded as part of the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR) during the early years of the Balkan Wars in the early 1990s.
