The Great Lane Cove Photo Scan

Between 10am and 4pm on Sunday 15 September, the LCHS is turning the Museum Room at Carisbrook Historic House into a digital photography hub. It is an exercise to increase our archival photo collection whilst helping you to digitise your precious family memories.

We will scan for free, while-you-wait, any ten of your family photographs to a USB stick provided by you.* The scans will be in high res JPG format and scanned individually in a flat-bed scan to ensure safe handling. We will not be using a scanner feeder.

The photographs must be over twenty-five years old, because the aim is to increase our local community’s history whilst making digital copies for you. After copying to your USB stick we will also record the details of your photograph and incorporate it into the LCHS digital photo archive which is part of the Carisbrook Collection. This archive is available to any academic historical researcher and to local historians.

Whilst we would prefer your photographs to be related to the local area, your images do not have to be located in Lane Cove, only to have some social relevance to life in Sydney at the time of the photograph.

If you do happen to have an album of photographs taken prior to 1920, we would love you to allow us to thumb through it and copy any extra photographs we might think historically relevant. Of course you would get digital copies of all the extra photographs we might scan.

Any photograph prior to 1900 is important in itself and we would urge you to allow us to archive these in our LCHS Collection. If you have a larger number of them over the limit of ten photographs, we would consider scanning these after the event day. Likewise any WWI photographs.

Old photographic prints continually deteriorate over time, therefore the process of capturing your precious photographs in a high res format is important. You are then able to make further print copies or consolidate them into a slideshow. What’s also important is that you are contributing to Sydney’s social history. So, win for you, win for us!
