The Hidden Garden

23 May 2019 @ 10:00 am - 2:30 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 10:00 am on Tuesday and Thursday, repeating until 29 June 2019

Free

The Hidden Garden is based on a revisionist version of the Adam and Eve fable. Told through the lens of the indigenous experience, the new story situates the protagonists in the Australian bush, narrated by an Elder.

Richly layered in symbolism, religious, pop-culture and cultural references, The Hidden Garden is an immersive experience of multi-media expression –painting, drawing, photography, site-specific installations, video and soundscape. It reflects a creative process that draws from elements of Travis De Vries’ Gamilaroi and Dharug cultural ancestry as well as his European heritage. At the heart of this narrative is a complex expression of identity and a quiet resistance of dominant cultural conditioning.

This 6-week exhibition is supported by Lane Cove Council to mark Reconciliation Week and is also funded by Create NSW. It is part of the Gai-mariagal Festival. The new body of works featured in The Hidden Garden is developed from Travis’ two residencies in 2018- at Australian Museum and Gallery Lane Cove. Travis De Vries was the 2018 Create NSW Aboriginal Arts Fellow.
