WAIG Women’s Discussion Group

19 November 2018 @ 10:30 am - 12:30 pm

$8 – $10

Dr Isobelle Barrett Meyering, a Macquarie University Research Fellow, will explore the life of Sydney feminist Bessie Guthrie (1905-1977) and discuss the ways in which activists have sought to preserve her legacy. After a career as a successful designer and publisher, Guthrie became a fierce advocate for the rights of young girls in state homes. Following her death in 1977, her fellow activists made a concerted effort to commemorate her life and her achievements. The talk will use the case study of Guthrie to explore broader questions about who we remember and why.
