On Tuesday 12 April 2016 Lane Cove lost one of its legends. Angelo Ippolito passed away peacefully in his sleep. He was 106 years old. Angelo is survived by the love of his life, his wife Elvira and children Anna, Louis and John, his 12 grandchildren and his 13 great-grandchildren.
Angelo was born in Sicily in 1910 and immigrated to Australia in 1918.
Angelo’s wife Elvira is also a long time Lane Cove Resident. When Angelo met Elvira, she was living with her parents in Hallam Ave, Lane Cove. Elvira’s mother was Francesca Russo (aka Nona Russo), and she had six daughters who also lived and raised their children in Lane Cove. Angelo and Elvira were married for 71 years.

Angelo and his brother-in-law purchased 25 acres In Lane Cove North. He kept one acre for the family home and sold the rest to a builder named Gordon Evans. Gordon Crescent and Elizabeth Parade, Lane Cove North are named after Gordon and wife Elizabeth. Gordon Evans built Angelo and Elvira’s house, and they lived there for 68 years.

Angelo worked hard at his fruit and vegetable wholesale business at Haymarket (which later moved to Flemington). This is how Angelo met Elvira. He was a fruit and vegetable wholesaler and Elvira’s father was a retailer. When you have 6 girls in one family there were plenty of male suitors.
He served in the Australian Army during WW2 in mainland defence and played Saxophone in the Army Band.

Angelo’s Funeral will be held at St Michael’s Parish Church Longueville Road Lane Cove On Monday 18th April 2016 at 2pm.
Vale Angelo Ippolito.
