Lane Cove News Week in Review 30th November to 5th December 2020

A big news week this week so let’s get straight to it.

Lane Cove Ferry –  Is it Being Cancelled?

This week Lane Cove Commuters were told by Captain Cook Cruises that the Lane Cove Ferry to the city (and used by many school kids) would be cancelled.  ITC has been inundated with emails, messages and texts asking if we can help with a campaign to save our ferries.

ITC has been working with Anthony Roberts office on this issue.  Read more here.

Storm Season is Here and So are Power Black Outs

We have had several big storms in the last couple of days.  On Tuesday 1st December 2020 many Lane Cove West and Riverview residents lost power.  It is always the same area in the Lane Cove Council area that has power supply issues.  ITC has contacted Ausgrid about this issue, and we will report more on this last week.  ITC has been keeping a list of all the blackouts in this area and the reason for the blackouts.  Read more here.

Truck Hits Power Pole at Riverview Shops

There was an accident on Wednesday, and a truck ran into a power pole in front of The Well Groomed Dog Grooming Riverview. No one was injured, and the Riverview shops lost power while Ausgrid worked to restore power.  See our cover photo.

Vale Phillip Dulhunty

A few days ago we said goodbye to a true Lane Cove and Greenwich Legend – Philip Dulhunty. ITC wrote an article about Philip a few years ago, and it was one of the most fascinating articles we have ever written. We used to see Philip all the time as he drove to Fitness Revelation for his exercise classes.

The following was posted on the Greenwich Flying Squadron Page.

“It is with sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Philip Dulhunty, OAM on Sunday 29 November 2020. Phil was a longstanding GFS member and active sailor on his yacht Meridian of Greenwich. He lived in Greenwich for over 40 years and was regularly seen using Humbug as a take-off and landing strip for his seaplane which was moored at his house.

He had a remarkable career as an aviator, power distribution entrepreneur and inventor and in 2009 published his autobiography Never a Dull Moment.

In 1986, he designed the “Flook”, an automatically setting flying anchor. The device automatically adopts the correct angle on the bottom, obviating the necessity for sailors to make the difficult estimation of depth and length of line to payout. The Flook was designed to adopt a 5:1 flying angle when deployed. It was patented and sold successfully in Japan and the US.

Philip Dulhunty was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2004 for “service to international trade through the design, manufacture and export of equipment for large high voltage electric systems, and to aviation, particularly through the Seaplane Pilots Association of Australia.

The link below gives insights into his life and achievements.”

The following message was posted on the Meeting House Kindergarten Facebook Page.
“Goodbye from Meeting House Kindergarten!
Today our beautiful little community Kindergarten closes its doors for the last time.
We have enjoyed every minute of the last 30 (or so) years working in the Lane Cove Community.
We would also like to send our thanks and gratitude to all past and present, staff, families and children and wish them all the very best xxxxx”

Lane Cove Council Issued With a Preliminary Investigation Notice for Lovetts Reserve

The EPA has issued Lane Cove Council with a preliminary investigation notice to assess possible contamination at Lovetts Reserve in Lane Cove West.  Read the Notice here.

The southern section of the walking tracks in Lovetts Reserve are closed while the environmental assessment takes place. There is no access from Burns Bay Road or the Boreen.  Access is still open from Cope Street, Myee Crescent, Penrose Street & Blackman Park.

This week ITC spent time in the local studies section of the Lane Cove Library looking at the history of this area and its previous industrial use of the area.  ITC will be publishing an article on this issue soon (it was fascinating to research).

Lovetts Reserve has been named by ITC’s expert running coach Andy Smith the number one trail run in Lane Cove. Read more here.

Fresh Christmas Trees Are Selling Like Hot Cakes In Lane Cove

After a 2020 that many would like to forget.  It looks like we are looking forward to spending time with family this year and we want to make Christmas special for everyone (we could not have a big Easter Celebration or Mothers Day).

Fresh Christmas Trees are selling very fast in Lane Cove.  ITC has purchased a fresh Christmas Tree from the Tambourine Bay Scouts for years and years, and we have never seen a line up like the one we saw at 7 am on Saturday 5th December.

Here is where you can buy Christmas Trees from Lane Cove community groups in the next week or so.

Lane Cove Locals In the News

Congratulations to local artist Debbey Watson. She received a highly commended at the Blacktown Art Prize. Her artwork was called Ruminations II. There is a solid lane cove connection to Debbey’s piece.

Debbie told ITC:

“The tan coloured clay I use in my ceramics is very rich in iron and is from my back garden in Lane Cove. I use it in slip form now and apply it over another clay body, that way I use less of it, and we don’t have to dig the garden up so often!

When I discovered how good my clay was four years ago, I researched the history of industrial clay usage in my local area. I discovered, that 100 years ago, pottery and brick works operated near where I live. There were two pottery manufacturers, one either side of Pottery Green, where they sourced their clay, it was then the head waters of Gore Creek. Artarmon Industrial Area operated for 150 years as one of the largest Brick and Tile manufacturers in NSW, closing in 1959. The sides of the quarries are still evident there!

Preparing and transforming my clay into ceramic forms is very satisfying and simultaneously connects me with my local community and its industrial clay history. Most likely, my house and many others in the surrounding area are built with bricks from across the highway in Artarmon!

Perhaps you already know about the clay history of Lane Cove and Artarmon, but it was exciting for me to learn of it and that we live on a rich seam of clay that contributed to the building of Sydney.”

Beware Porch Pirates Are Active after Black Friday/Cyber Monday

Australians have shopped online like never before as 2.2 million households around the country clicked ‘add to cart’ and bagged a bargain in the four days to Cyber Monday. Online shopping growth was up more than 42 per cent for the same period, beating the record set in 2019.

On a state-by-state basis, New South Wales lead the way holding more than a third of total purchase volume.

Australia Post stated “As our posties and drivers are delivering more parcels than ever, we’re asking the community to help keep them safe by looking out for them on the road and keeping dogs secured,”

However, this surge in online sales also leads to porch pirates.  We have already had reports of parcels being stolen.  So be on the lookout for strangers around your mailbox and entering apartment buildings.  Read more about porch pirates here.

This week a motorcycle was stolen from outside apartments in Waterview Drive/Burns Bay Road.  Large bolt cutters were used to remove the chain.

Roving reporters advised that traffic was impacted and the NSW Fire and Rescue were on the scene.  There were no reports of serious injuries.   After two accidents in two weeks at this notorious intersection, a few days later the sign below was installed.

Love is All Around Us – Actually

We want to finish off our week in review with a lovely picture.  This has been one of our most liked pictures in the history of In the Cove.
A roving reporter sent us this photo, and it just makes us smile. Love is in the Air (if only JPY could sing at The Canopy). We all need a bit more love and understanding in 2020. BTW they are married (not random strangers ignoring the social distancing rule LOL).
