Lane Cove Council’s Get That Job Success Story – Miriam Cuellar

For the last couple of years, Lane Cove Council has been holding seminars aimed at residents who have been made redundant or are having a hard time getting a job.  The workshops are called Get That Job and are well attended.

Lane Cove resident Miriam Cuellar participated in the workshop, and this is her story.

Moving countries, especially with kids is not an easy endeavour.  While trying to support your family, finding the right job becomes challenging, particularly when you’ve just arrived and have so many things to worry about, plus adapting.  Having been in Australia for almost 7 years, I kept learning new things about the Australian culture every day.

Last year, I was ready to take the next step in my career.  Browsing through In The Cove Facebook page I saw a post about Get That Job.

I was stoked to know that the council organised free workshops and the best part was learning that volunteers facilitate such a great programme.

Mike Taylor, another Lane Cove local, is the lead facilitator. Mike has years of experience, assisting people in managing their careers.  He has worked internationally in the airline and oil industries, before a change himself into career management consulting.

Mike is a knowledgeable and great advisor.  The 1:1’s with him are priceless.  I can’t thank him enough for his patience, guidance, and support.

You see, the workshop was not only a 3.5hr session, but you also become part of an on-going “Slack” community.

The program includes zoom discussions, weekly Monday morning coffee meetings, communications via Slack, group dinner catch-ups, interaction with other participants who share their experience and provide advice; and best of all, provides you with a local network.  It’s amazing how sharing the journey of finding a job with other people can make the process more enjoyable.

I am grateful to have attended the “Get that Job” workshop: April, 2021.  It helped me improve my preparation for job applications and interviews, provided me with a better understanding of the Australian work culture, and made me realize how important was to leverage my network.

I have kept in touch with the “Slack” community knowing that I can always reach out to them for advice.  It’s also inspired me to give back to my community when I retire like Mike.
