National Road Safety Week – Take the Pledge

This week (15 to 22 May 2022) is National Road Safety Week.  This year the organisers are asking you to take a pledge – it’s a simple one – drive as if your loved ones are on the road ahead.

Take the Pledge

The full pledge is as follows:

“I pledge to drive as if my loved ones are on the road ahead.

I will remove all distractions and never use my mobile phone while driving.

I will not put other people at risk by speeding, driving while tired or under the influence of alcohol/drugs.

I will protect all vulnerable road users, especially those whose job places them in harm’s way, by slowing down and giving them the space they need to be safe.”

You can take the pledge here.

Lane Cove Council Events

Lane Cove Council’s safety team has put together a big line-up of events to commemorate National Road Safety Week.

Seniors Driving Workshop

Wednesday 18 May, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm, Lane Cove Library

This free workshop will detail specific risk factors for Senior Drivers, low risk driving strategies, what you need to know about new car technology, road rules and understanding of the NSW Older Driver Assessment.

To book, call Council’s Road Safety Officer on 9911 3576 or email [email protected].

Helping Learner Drivers Become Safer Drivers

Thursday 19 May, 6:00 pm – 7:15 pm, online via Zoom

The free workshop supports parents and supervisors of learner drivers to be confident and effective teachers. Topics include information and licence conditions for learner and P-plate drivers, tips for using the learner driver log book and the importance of providing constructive feedback.

There has been very positive feedback to the Lane Cove Council’s workshops. Parents and supervisors who have attended the workshop have stated that the workshop boosted their confidence, helped them better plan driving sessions and allowed them to share experiences with other parents and supervisors.

In 2017, there were changes to the graduated licensing scheme (GLS) for learner P1 and P2 drivers. Learner drivers must complete a Hazard Perception Test before undertaking the practical driving test.

Since the introduction of the GLS there has been a 50 per cent reduction in the number of young drivers killed on its roads in NSW – However, younger drivers continue to be overrepresented in road deaths and trauma.

P-platers make up 8.0 per cent of all driver licence holders, yet their crashes account for 15 per cent of all fatalities on NSW roads.

Book online.

Saturday 21 May, 9:00 am – 1:00 pm, Lane Cove Council car park

Make sure your child is safe with a free inspection by Authorised Restraint Fitters. You can have your child’s car seats, harnesses and booster seats checked for safety and fit.
