Family of Man Injured in Alleged Lane Cove Stabbing Attack Pleas for an Australian Visa

    The following has been reported in The Australia Today:

    “Gold Coast-based Registered Migration Agent Seema Chauhan helped Shubham’s family in the Australian Visa application process. Shubham’s brother Rohit Garg has been granted Visa to come to Australia to be with his brother.

    Sydney-based Indian Australian community leader Dr Yadu Singh has also been actively involved in this process. He had also urged Australia’s High Commissioner in India Barry O’Farrell and Indian High Commissioner in Australia Manpreet Vohra to help the family.

    India’s Ministry of External Affairs in a statement said they are aware of the attack on an Indian national in Australia: “The Indian national is in hospital, our High commission & consulate is in close touch with local authorities & family here. Our officials have met the national. Our expectations is that action must be taken on perpetrators.”

    On 6 October 2022, around 10.30 pm a 28-year-old man suffered multiple wounds to his face, chest and abdomen after an alleged stabbing at the corner of Pacific Highway and Gatacre Avenue Lane Cove.

    The injured man was later identified as Shubham Garg.   According to recent tweets, he has only been in Australia for a month and was undertaking a PhD at the University of New South Wales.  ITC has also been advised that he worked in the kitchen of a Lane Cove restaurant.

    His sister tweeted the following:

     

    Her request for assistance has been taken up by well-known cardiologist Dr Yadu Singh.  He has tagged Barry O’Farrell, Australia’s High Commissioner to India.

    It is not known if an emergency travel visa has been issued.

    Background Information

    As reported by ITC on 7th October 2022.

    Police are alleging that a 28-year-old man was approached by an unknown male at the top of Gatacre Avenue near the Pacific Highway Lane Cove at around 10.30 pm on Thursday, 6 October 2022.

    The unknown male allegedly threatened the 28-year-old while demanding cash.

    The man refused and was allegedly stabbed a number of times in the abdomen before the assailant fled.

    Just after 10.30 pm, emergency services were called.  The North Shore Police Area Command attended and located the injured man and established a crime scene.  The crime scene extended to just past the old Country Comfort Inn.

     

    NSW Ambulance told ITC they arrived at 10.40 pm before being taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition; his injuries were not considered life-threatening.

    NSW Police started a man-hunt, and Polair was involved in the search but it was called off without a result . Residents heard numerous police sirens between 10.30 pm and 11.30 pm on Thursday, 6 October 2022.

    Following extensive inquiries by Strike Force Prosy detectives, a search warrant was executed on a home on the Pacific Highway at Greenwich at about 3.40 pm on Sunday 9 October 2022).

    27-year-old man was arrested at the scene and was taken to Chatswood Police Station, where he was charged with one count of attempted murder after the alleged stabbing.

    A number of items were seized from the home and have been taken for forensic examination.

    He was refused bail and appeared at Hornsby Local Court on Monday, 10 October 2022.  He will remain in custody with the next court appearance on 14 December 2020.  Details of court appearance below.

    Incident Location

    The Police Media Unit referred to this incident as taking place in Artarmon – the Pacific Highway is on the border between Lane Cove and Artarmon.  The 99 Bikes Store side is Lane Cove and the Car Dealerships side is Artamon.  The incident took place on the corner of Gatacre Avenue and Pacific Highway Lane Cove.
