Lane Cove News Week in Review ending 11 Jan 2023

Welcome to our first Lane Cove News week in review for 2023.

Wet Weather

It was a wet start to 2023 with torrential rain, wind and the obligatory power outage. There was flooding on Epping Road near 150 Epping Road Lane Cove.

Potholes

The wet weather led to large potholes appearing around Lane Cove.   The pothole that claimed the most victims was on Burns Bay Road near Waterview Drive.  This road is maintained by Transport for NSW.

Lane Cove Council can now apply for a one-off payment to help them fix roads that have been damaged by successive severe weather events throughout 2022.

Councils need to make an application to Transport for NSW, which will allocate the funds based on total kilometres of roads managed in each local government area..

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Sam Farraway said the NSW Government made the decision to open applications earlier following an overwhelmingly positive response from mayors and councils.

“We’ve fast-tracked this cash injection and made the process simple so councils can focus on important road repairs that will keep communities connected and safe,” Mr Farraway said.

“We understand the job councils have ahead of them and that’s why we have been helping with financial assistance since early last year and providing engineers, road workers and machinery.

“Our road maintenance crews have been hard at work repairing the state-managed road network since the first bout of serve weather hit, patching more than 200,000 potholes on major roads and highways since last February.

Lane Cove Ferry

In December 2022 Captain Cook Cruises announced it would no longer run the Longueville Ferry (read more here).  After a public campaign to reconsider this decision, Captain Cook Cruises continued to run the Ferry.  They have now been awarded a 15-year extension of the Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW) Lane Cove ferry service.

SeaLink has run the Lane Cove ferry service for 17 years under the Captain Cook Cruises brand providing important public transport access for Lane Cove River residents and school children.

Running up to 12 services a day Monday to Friday during peak commute times, the service connects passengers along Lane Cove River to Balmain, Darling Harbour, Circular Quay, Milsons Point and Kirribilli Wharf. The new contract sees an additional run added to the morning departures to provide commuters with more options during peak travel times.

Nick Lester, General Manager for SeaLink Sydney Harbour said “SeaLink is pleased to continue working with Transport for New South Wales to provide this important transport service for North Sydney commuters.”

SeaLink’s passenger messaging system will integrate with TfNSW’s system and further integrate the Opal payment mechanism improving the overall passenger experience.

“We pride ourselves on providing a brilliant customer experience to our guests onboard all our vessels and with the additional morning departure added to the timetable and the further integration with the State Government’s Opal pay system will ensure travelling with us will be an even smoother and more convenient experience,” Mr Lester said.

The new contract with the New South Wales State Government also provides an option to move to low emissions technology during the term, which may include the construction of an electric powered ferry capable of operating the service in battery mode.

SeaLink Marine & Tourism Chief Operating Officer, Donna Gauci, said “As Australia’s largest marine transport and tourism provider, SeaLink is genuinely committed to investing in more sustainable marine transport solutions to benefit the environment and communities we operate in around the country.”

SeaLink Marine & Tourism is part of the Kelsian Group which is a leader in sustainable public transport and operator of Australia’s largest zero emission bus fleet and Australia’s largest electrified bus depot.

“We are working with governments and clients around Australia to pursue the design and construction of low and green emission vessels including hydrogen and electric and look forward to working with Transport for New South Wales on more sustainable marine transport solutions for Sydney commuters,” she said.

The new contract for the Lane Cove ferry service commenced on 1 January 2023.

Lane Cove Sport and Recreation – Have Your Say on the Development Application

On 29 November 2022, Lane Cove Council lodged a Development Application for the new revised 8-court layout. The Development Application exhibition process commenced on 30 November 2022 and will continue to 13 January 2023.

The proposed development includes the following aspects:

• Demolition and site preparation works;

• Lot consolidation and amalgamation;

• Construction of a two (and part three-storey/mezzanine) multi-purpose sport facility comprising 6,235m2 of GFA apportioned to the following uses:

– 3,215m2 of indoor sports hall;

– 277m2 Bistro (including servery and golf display area);

– 655m2 of multipurpose space shared between 4 rooms; – 118m2 of lounge space and 56m2 of office space;

• Cut, fill, releveling and construction of lower ground parking level with 248 parking spaces, including 6 accessible parking spaces, 10 bicycle parking spaces and 16 motorbike parking spaces;

  • Construction of four new outdoor multi-purpose courts (3,665m2 GFA);

• Landscaping works including tree planting.

Mayor Andrew Zbik has noted that the landscaping works include extensive tree planting, which exceeds council’s 2:1 tree replacement commitment. A total of 226 trees are proposed to be planted to compensate for canopy loss (79 trees to be removed) and enhance the biodiversity of the proposed development.

ITC note:  There is an interesting article in The Conversation about Why Saving One Mature Tree is better than planting new ones.  Read more here.

The Development Application will be assessed by The Sydney North Planning Panel.

The development application (DA147/2022) was submitted and is open for your viewing and comments until 13 January 2023.

If you would like to comment on the DA your written submission to [email protected] or post to Lane Cove Council, PO Box 20, Lane Cove NSW 1595; quoting DA 147/2022.

Incidents and Accidents

The following were posted on ITC Lane Cove Chat:

Car Theft – Fourth Avenue Lane Cove 8/1 around 3am

“Be careful everyone, my car was stolen last night from my garage which was accidentally left open but not visible from the street so these people walked down the driveway looking with intent to steal something and saw my garage was open. I was woken by a noise in the garage and then the next thing I heard is my car started and driven away. If you notice a 2007 4 door silver Toyota Yaris BCM 72N in the area could you please let me know. I’m hoping the thieves will realise it is hardly a car of value and might have dumped it nearby. Police report taken, car was hotwired as the two keys to it are in the house. There were two people and I heard a female voice speak in a foreign language. Please be careful everyone, extra vigilant.”

Another follower posted:

“Keep your cars locked people, this happened during the day. On the plus side at least the window shattered and they didn’t get in but we were home and heard nothing”
