Lane Cove News Week in Review 9th to 16th August 2023

Welcome to our week in review.

The Canopy Erupts

The Canopy was packed on Saturday night to watch the tense battle between France and the Matildas. The semi-final will be shown tonight in The Canopy.

Northern Beaches Council did not have a live site planned for Matilda’s semi-final match. Local news publisher Manly Observer used The Canopy’s live site as an example of community building, and on Monday a live site in Cromer was announced. Well done to Lane Cove Council for such a great live site at The Canopy.

Lane Cove Mum’s Warning About The Canopy Playground

The following was posted on ITC Lane Cove Chat.

“Hello, Lane Cove mums and dads; I wanted to quickly ask if anyone was at the canopy last Friday, August 4th at 11:30 am. I was there with my 2.5-year-old daughter Lyla, and whilst I was going down to meet her at the slide, I slipped down the slope with rock climbing handles and broke my ankle. There were some beautiful mums and dads that rushed over to help me, helped my daughter, and waited with me until the ambulance arrived. I wanted to thank everyone who was patient, endured my yelling, and communicated with my family and the ambulance about what happened. Apologies for the shock it may have given the children as the bone and turned ankle was a bit scary.

If anyone who was there remembers me or the incident, please message me personally. I would appreciate any insight you can provide. Thanks again to the beautiful community.”

After this post was published, numerous comments from others said they had also slipped in the same spot.

Nominate a Community Sports Dad

Lane Cove’s parents worked weekly to support their kids’ sports clubs.

Communities are encouraged to nominate a local dad to be crowned Australia’s “Community Sports Dad of the Year” ahead of Father’s Day.

Nominations are now open for the tenth annual Philips Community Sports Dad of the Year award, which acknowledges the contributions and positive impact that Australian dads have made to their families and community on and off the sporting field.

Celebrating ten years of this prestigious award, dads across Australia have been acknowledged for their commitment to community sport – from coaching duties, painting lines on the pitch to raising funds for new equipment. This year, the hunt is on again for Australia’s Community Sports Dad of the Year, with submissions now open until midnight AEST on Tuesday, 22 August 2023.

Damien Cook, Rabbitohs and NSW Origin star who won the 2022 Celebrity Sports Dad of the Year award, knows first-hand the support he received from his dad growing up and aspires to do the same with his kids, Willow and Jagger.

“Speaking from experience with my dad when I was younger, community dads are so significant with their roles – from being a coach, setting up fields, refereeing and driving us to and from training and on-game days.

“My dad did this all while working full time and then worked overtime just to earn the extra time off to get me to and from my commitments and support me. I’ll always be grateful for that.”

Every athlete has a story of who has supported them over the years. In many cases, this parent has committed to championing community sports from the sidelines or behind the scenes. The Philips Community Sports Dad of the Year Award was created to come together and collectively say thanks ahead of Father’s Day.

Nominations are now open and close at midnight AEST on 22 August 2023.

To nominate a community sports dad, submit 100 words on why they should win via www.sportsdads.com.au

The winner will be notified before Father’s Day, Sunday, 3 September, with the prize pack including a Philips male grooming pack valued at over $1,000 RRP, as well as a $5,000 Rebel Sports voucher to purchase new clothing or sporting equipment for the community sports club of choice. Those who nominate the successful dad will also have the chance to win a Philips OneBlade Pro ahead of Father’s Day.

Week in Review – Sponsor Lane Cove Dance Academy

Lane Cove Dance Academy offers dance classes for students three years old and upwards (boys and girls) in Cecchetti classical ballet, jazz, hip-hop, tap, acrobatics and contemporary dance.

They aim to offer each student professional tuition in dance.

Dance teaches self-discipline, creativity, poise, grace, expression, correct posture and spontaneity. It improves confidence and builds self-esteem. Dance is an excellent character builder and benefits every child as a recreational hobby or a step towards a dance career.

Dance is inclusive. Dance training also teaches students that diligent work pays off. If they continue to put effort into their classwork, they will see results in the mirror. It’s a concrete way for children to see that observing their actions and listening to teacher guidance, combined with hard work, leads to positive results.

They believe it is so vital the students learn the love of dance in a safe and caring environment.

They have four beautiful dance studios, all with fully sprung floors, barres, mirrors and air-conditioning. We are in the heart of Lane Cove, conveniently located for shopping, coffee and parental errands during lessons. The new canopy development is right next to our studios.

The school is run by principals Jane Moran and Dianne Pokorny.
