It’s back!! A highlight on the Lane Cove Calendar is the Jesuit Mission’s Bazaar held every year in September at St Ignatius College Riverview.
Up to 8,000 people of all ages will flock to the event for a day of activities, bargains, rides, music, shows, raffles, prizes, food, spruiking and all out fun. Although the event is sure to be a crowd pleaser, it is about much more than just entertainment and enjoyment on the day.
All funds raised from the annual event go to support Jesuit Mission’s community development work in over ten countries across Asia and Africa.
Helen Forde, CEO of Jesuit Mission, says:
“The Bazaar is our major fundraising event of the year. The money raised on the day funds a substantial portion of our work. For example, the funds raised from the event last year could cover our projects in four countries in Africa.
“However, the work of Jesuit Mission is only made possible through the dedication and support of the Jesuit community of supporters here in Australia. The Indian Bazaar sees individuals generously contributing their time, skills and talent to raise funds for our brothers and sisters who live on the margins. It is an expression of faith in action.”
The Indian Bazaar is much more than your average fête. It is a tremendous community gathering with schools, parishes, current and former students, local businesses and other community groups coming together. The stand in solidarity with people they may never meet, but whose lives are transformed by their generosity.
Although the event is held at one school (St Ignatius Riverview), the Bazaar is very much a part of the entire Sydney Jesuit community. The school kindly donates the use of their fabulous facilities and the old boys sell a mean ham with their famous ham wheel (see below).
Every student in the St Ignatius’ College actively participates in the running of the Bazaar. Many parents and committee members put huge effort into planning, cooking, transport, manning stalls and donating goods and prizes. Indian Bazaar volunteers and supporters truly represent St Ignatius’ call to be “men and women for others”.
Your attendance at the Bazaar will help fund life-changing education programs for girls and boys; provide food and essential services to refugees displaced by conflict; provide healthcare and livelihood training to some of the world’s poorest communities; support vulnerable individuals through pastoral care, and provide emergency relief to communities affected by disasters.
It is a must do event if you love rides, hamburgers, scones, champers and oysters and much more.

History of the Indian Bazzar
The Bazaar began over six decades ago, to support six entrepid Jesuits. These young men followed their calling as Jesuit priests to “go where the need is greatest, to go where others will not go”. They departed for a life of devotion to others, and began work in impoverished villages of Hazaribag, India.
After farewelling their ship, the mothers, families and friends of these six men rallied together to create a fundraiser to support their work overseas. This work, which began by teaching a few children under the shade of a tree, has increased over their lifetimes. The Jesuits now educate 27,000 students every year. But the need continues, and so does the Bazaar.
