Lane Cove Men’s Shed Shoulder to Shoulder – Meet Robert Woodbury

In the heart of Lane Cove, a remarkable man stands as a living testament to the enduring spirit of camaraderie. Robert Woodbury, a Vietnam veteran, embodies the motto “shoulder to shoulder” through his service as a mechanic in 5 Company of the Royal Australian Army Service Corp (RAASC). Based at 1 ALSG (Australian Logistics Support Group) in Vung Tau and together with his experiences in Nui Dat and Saigon shaped his profound understanding of solidarity.

During his time in Vietnam, Robert faced the harsh realities of war, losing two dear friends and witnessing three others wounded. Among Robert’s myriad stories, one stands out—a daring mission to recover a stranded Centurion tank behind enemy lines, a tale of bravery and resilience.

Today, Robert continues his legacy of unity and support as a member of The Lane Cove Community Men’s Shed.

The shed’s motto, “shoulder to shoulder,” reflects the indomitable mateship exhibited by Australian soldiers, and it finds new life within the shed’s walls. Here, men gather to work on woodwork projects, crafting not just objects, but also bonds that enrich their lives and community.

As Robert Woodbury’s journey demonstrates, the “shoulder to shoulder” ethos transcends the battlefield, fostering a sense of togetherness that builds bridges between the military and civilian worlds. At The Men’s Shed,  this spirit lives on, nurturing a space where men support one another, just as they did in the face of far greater challenges.

The Lane Cove Community Men’s Shed (“the Shed”)

The Lane Cove Community Men’s Shed is open to any men who have a shoulder to lean on or, need a shoulder.

The Lane Cove Community Men’s Shed is the perfect place for men looking to craft a nice dovetail and improve their mental well-being at the same time.

“In a world where loneliness and mental health issues hide beneath the surface, this busy workshop is out to prove that good company can work wonders for our hearts and minds,” says Peter Stidston, Lane Cove Community Men’s Shed President.

“This is not just a place for repairing furniture. It is a community of men with common interests, who like to fix things and enjoy a good laugh at the same time.

Step through our doors, and you’ll be immediately impressed by the camaraderie and mateship where you can open up, contribute your skills and make a real difference. It can be a lifeline”, says Peter.

The Shed welcomes men from all walks of life. Whether you are a skilled tradesman, like painting or want to learn new skills, you will fit in at the Shed.

The Lane Cove Community Men’s Shed is seeking new members to have fun and feel the power of connection. Whether you’re keen on making wooden toys for your grandkids, tinkering with tools, or just reminiscing about the good ol’ times, the Shed offers a smorgasbord of opportunities.
