Lane Cove Locals

Congratulations to Lane Cove’s John Heffernan, who was the first to complete 200 park runs at Willoughby Parkrun.

Below is a photo of John and his wife Denise and three daughters, Joanne, Kathleen and Clare. All three sons-in-law were there, and half of his grandchildren. His youngest grandchild, Lucy, ran with him over the finish line.

NSW Fire and Rescue Visiting Homes In Lane Cove

Last Week, Fire and Rescue NSW Station 061 Lane Cove came to ITC’s house to check our smoke alarms. They do a free inspection service and will install at no cost smoke detectors if they think your home needs them.

They also provide excellent advice. In particular, most fires start due to cheap appliances from overseas that don’t meet Australian Standards and people walking away while cooking.

They also said don’t leave your house when the dryer is on (and always clean the lint filter) and never leave the house when the oven is on.

You can call them on 02 9493 1061 or sign up online – see our article for more details.

A Big Week for Utilities in Lane Cove

Ausgrid

Ausgrid installed a massive new electrical transformer at the corner of Tambourine Bay Road and Miramont Avenue Riverview. Here’s hoping it will assist in reducing the number of power outages in that area (which has more outages than other parts of Lane Cove).

Sydney Water

A burst water main in Cullen Street on Friday Night resulted in water gushing down the street. Sydney Water was soon on the scene and fixed the issue without turning off the water supply.

Burns Bay Reserve

The machinery at Burns Bay Reserve has been there for a couple of days. Transport for NSW (marine division) and NSW Heritage and Environment (that look after estuaries) have been unable to advise ITC on what is happening.

Lane Cove Market Square

The issues with lifts and escalators continue at Lane Cove Market Square. Last week, the escalator down to Woolworths was out of action for a few days.

Lane Cove is Looking for a Person to Design a new Sculpture for the Upgraded Blackman Park Skatepark.

Lane Cove Council is seeking the design, construction, and installation of a sculpture for the upgraded skatepark.

The skatepark is in an old quarry at Blackman Park on Lloyd Rees Drive. The skate park upgrade will be a welcome addition to the recreational activities at Blackman Park. The design should reflect the surrounding natural environment.

The project is open to artists who reside in the local area and greater Sydney.

All eligible applicants, regardless of race, sex, religion, nationality, origin or disability, will be considered.

Please visit the Council’s Streetside Gallery webpage for the artist brief and further information. Submissions must be received by 5 pm Monday, 30 October 2023.

For further enquiries, please get in touch with Lane Cove Council’s Co-Ordinator Parks and Urban Spaces at [email protected].

Sydney Traffic and Train Impacts over the October Long Weekend

Travellers are advised to plan and allow additional travel time with traffic changes and essential rail trackwork planned over the October long weekend.

Transport for NSW A/Coordinator General Grant Knoetze said closures and detours will be in place southbound on the Warringah Freeway and Sydney Harbour Bridge.
“The closures will include the Freeway’s southbound outer carriageway from Miller Street to Falcon Street, as well as the southbound Miller Street on-ramp, Military Road (Falcon Street) off-ramp and the Alfred Street off-ramp,” Mr Knoetze said.
“These changes will be in place from Friday night, 29 September, to Tuesday morning, 3 October, with drivers urged to check the live traffic website for specific times.
“The Miller Street on-ramp will remain closed for the whole weekend, while the two off-ramps will be reopened during most of the day.
“Motorists travelling south along the Gore Hill Freeway or Lane Cove Tunnel are urged to use the Pacific Highway instead of the Warringah Freeway and must do so if they want to access lower North Shore suburbs, Mosman and Manly.
“Those needing to access the Sydney Harbour Bridge from Cammeray are advised to use the Falcon St on-ramp at North Sydney.
“Two southbound lanes on the Warringah Freeway outer carriageway will be reopened for most of the day following overnight closures.”
Mr Knoetze said we are taking this opportunity to also carry out regular maintenance at the same time on the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
“Lane 6 and lane 7 (the bus lane) southbound on the bridge will be closed continuously from Friday night until early Tuesday morning, while lane eight southbound on the Cahill Expressway will also have overnight closures,” he said.
“Motorists can continue to use the Sydney Harbour Tunnel and the open lanes on the Sydney Harbour Bridge during these closures.
“We encourage road users, including public transport passengers, travelling south along the Warringah Freeway towards the CBD or airport to allow extra travel time and to plan.
“Those travelling to and from the inner west should be aware that part of the WestConnex network, including the M4 East, M8 and the M4-M8 Link, will be closed from 9 pm Monday 2 October to 5 am Tuesday.
“The extended works over the October long weekend have been planned to take advantage of reduced traffic demand, which minimises the impacts that would otherwise be experienced during a weekday road closure.”

Toll Rises

If you drive to work, be prepared to pay more for Tolls.

The following was released by the Minister for Roads

Tolls on the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Tunnel will increase on October 29 – the first time they have risen in more than 14 years.

Bridge and Tunnel tolls will be adjusted 6.8% higher as the NSW Government continues its agenda to bring more significant equity to motorists across the system following last week’s announcement of a $60 toll cap and the ongoing Independent Toll Review led by Professor Allan Fels.

All extra revenue will go to the Government’s toll relief Budget package worth $561 million over two years to 720,000 drivers.

The last time the Bridge and Tunnel tolls were raised was in January 2009, and they have remained fixed at $4.00 during peak times, $3.00 off-peak and $2.50 at night.

From Sunday, 29 October, that will become $4.27 in peak, $3.20 off-peak and $2.67 at night.

The 6.8 per cent rise is a fraction of the CPI increase during the 14 years and seven months since the last adjustment. In the same period, motorists using privately owned toll roads have faced regular toll hikes under motorway contracts.

Ministerial Order will adjust to the Roads Act 1993.

Bridge and Tunnel tolls are required by law to be reviewed annually, and the recommended increase must have regard to the recent inflation rate. For twelve years, the former Government refused to increase the toll.

Australia Post Looking for Drivers

With Uni finishing soon, there might be locals looking for a job. Australia Post has a massive recruitment drive at the moment.

Australia Post is looking to recruit around 3,000 seasonal casuals as it ramps operations in the lead-up to Christmas. This year’s seasonal recruitment drive is focused on finding people with specific skills, experience and licenses.

Top of Australia Post’s wish list are applicants with a valid forklift or truck licence. Seasonal casual roles are also available for freight handlers and parcel processers across the delivery network. Australia Post is getting prepared ahead of what is expected to be a busy cyber sales period and in the lead-up to Christmas.

Roles are available across all States and Territories. However, New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland have the highest demand for seasonal casuals.

Susan Davies, Executive General Manager of People and Culture, highlighted the critical role that seasonal casuals play in helping Australia Post ensure deliveries reach customers in time for the holiday period.

“As we approach our busiest time of year, we’re looking to bolster our workforce to ensure we can meet increased demand and maintain the high level of service Australians expect from Australia Post.

“We’re looking for seasonal casuals to work alongside our existing team members and would love to hear from people who have a valid forklift or truck license, as well as people looking to work in parcel processing, deliveries and freight handling.

“Working at Australia Post offers team members the opportunity to be a part of a great, supportive team and help to spread the Merry this Christmas. Working in a seasonal casual role can also create opportunities to work with Australia Post beyond the end of the year. Many team members initially joined us as a seasonal casual and are still part of our team many years later,” Ms Davies said.

Those interested can apply by visiting www.auspost.com.au/seasonalcasuals or the Australia Post careers website at jobs.auspost.com.au.

Australia Post is proud to have one of Australia’s most diverse workforces and employs people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to reflect the communities it serves nationwide.
