Minis

LCJRC’s aim for this age group is to ensure that all the kids get involved, have a lot of fun and learn the game in a safe and positive environment.

Dads and mums help coach and manage the teams, and the atmosphere on and off the ground is one of great sportsmanship and community.

Each age group is different:

U5 – can participate in the ‘Mighty 5’s Program’ where they learn basic skills and have a fun game each Saturday, there is no training.

U6 – Touch rugby – 6 a side – there’s no tackling involved. No scoring is kept. It’s great fun to see the kids grow and make friends while immersing themselves in the game.

U7 – Touch rugby – 7 a side – there’s still no tackling but the games have more structure; more rules are added and everything flows a bit better. No scoring is kept.

U8 – Tackle – 7 a side – Ruck and maul starts at this age but there’s no contesting in the scrums or line outs –  safety is rule number one and it’s a very controlled environment with each Coach on the field.

U9 – similar to U8 but with two extra players in each team.

All coaches and assistant coaches are SMART Rugby Qualified. Practically, this means they know the rules, the safety drills and have great knowledge to pass on to the kids.

TRAINING

U6, U7, U8 and U9 train at Blackman Park on Thursdays from 5pm to 6pm.

GAMES

The minis play on Saturday mornings. Home games are played at Tantallon. Away games are played at a variety of ovals through Sydney’s North Shore. U5 team games are on Saturday mornings at Chatswood.

If you have questions please contact the mini coordinators:

Bring a Buddy Day at The Diddy – 24 February 2024 @ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Under 10’s and above

Graded competition begins in the U10s and Lane Cove competes in the Sydney wide competition run by the Sydney Junior Rugby Union.  Matches are mostly played on Sundays with the occasional game played on a Friday night.  Lane Cove would typically field a strong side in either A or B grade with subsequent teams distributed through the gradings based on ability.

Players from Lane Cove who are of a sufficiently high standard are eligible for selection by the Gordon District, and numerous Lane Cove players over the years have been selected to represent Gordon at the NSW State Championships, which are held on the King’s Birthday Long Weekend in June every year. From here, players are eligible for selection in SJRU representative squads.

LCJRU U14 team tours New Zealand every year, which has become a highlight for many of the kid’s junior rugby careers. Parents are encouraged to attend the New Zealand Tour, and the boys all participate in fundraising activities to support the tour. The club also operates smaller NSW regional Tours every year for selected Mini and Junior teams.

The club holds various social events throughout the year, including Jersey Day, Trophy Day, Parents Social, and the legendary Long Lunch (in support of the U14 tour). These events are a great way to engage with other families in the neighborhood.

Play Safe

If you or your child is playing sport, make sure you invest in a Mouth Guard.

Did you know more than 5 million teeth are knocked out during sporting activities every year? What is even worse is that it’s estimated between 30% and 50% of these injuries could have been prevented or would have been less severe had a mouthguard been worn.

Find out more here about mouthguards from www.appledental.com.au
