Lane Cove Council East Ward Candidates

David Roenfeldt – Labor

David has lived in Lane Cove since 2012 and is qualified in Aerospace Engineering, with experience in retail warehousing, environmental test engineering and is currently employed in transport logistics.

He has often in the past been a representative of his peers, hence a natural progression to representing others. He believes in fairness, justice and equality, fundamental principles of the Labor Party. He joined the Party in 2011 and has served as Lane Cove Labor Branch president from 2017-2021 and is currently serving as branch secretary.

David was elected to Council in 2021 and has served the last 12 months as Deputy Mayor. This term of Council has been more difficult than it should have been so it is critically important to have an executive team that respect staff and ensure good governance, accountability and stability.

David wants to ensure that existing and future capital works programs continue to deliver the infrastructure required to meet the needs of future and existing residents, including more open space, bushland, recreation and sporting facilities. He also wants to protect the character of the Lane Cove Village and heritage of the Greenwich Peninsula in the face of wide sweeping reforms to address the housing crisis.

David regularly monitors with posts on ITC chat, attends GCA meetings, conducts community ZOOM’s, participates in Councillors and Labor Street Stalls in the Plaza, releases a monthly video of Council Agenda summary to subscribed East Ward residents and is always available to be contacted by phone, email or meet up in the Plaza.

Nick Riggs – The Greens

I am a mental health worker supporting society’s most vulnerable people. My work has reinforced the value that a caring, supportive and fair community has on lives, and this is why I have always passionately advocated for people, the environment and my community.

I moved to Greenwich in 2023, attracted by the stunning natural environment, amazing community and the lifestyle afforded by this vibrant pocket of Sydney. I soon became aware that despite the knowledge, passion and enthusiasm of residents, councillors were not listening to our concerns.

If elected, I will fight for;

  • Accountability and transparency – restoring community consultation at every council meeting.
  • Lowering cost of living pressures by reconsidering outsourcing of council services, including council run child-care and sport and leisure facilities.
  • Our unique natural environment and ensure that our council is 100% carbon-neutral by the end of this term.
  • Sensible, accessible, and environmentally friendly housing – with appropriate local infrastructure, green spaces, and transport.
  • The 30% of Lane Cove residents who are renters.

My training in psychology has taught me how to actively listen to people and have difficult, honest conversations with empathy and compassion.  I plan to bring this skill to council – to ensure that residents have a seat at the table in all council meetings by combing the public forum and council meeting.

Number Two on Nick’s Ticket – Milo Riggs
Number Three on Nick’s Ticket – Alan King

Merri Southwood – Independent

I seek the opportunity to serve another term as an Independent Councillor, with the support of two great group members, Helena Greenwell and Peter Re.

Our LGA’s major challenge is to preserve the features that make our LGA a great place to live whilst doing our bit to meet the very pressing demands for housing. We will work to bring our community along with Council in this process.

We will work to completion of our major developments within budget. But we must then focus on caring for what we have. Fix the infrastructure that has been neglected, focus on caring for bushland and waterways and implement a robust asset maintenance program to avoid a burden on future residents.

And we must look to sharing our scarce but beautiful open space.

We want our community members to have confidence that they have a real role in Council decision making and to fully understand the reasoning behind resolutions of Council.

Our community members are engaged, talented and experienced – we will work towards greater teamwork with our community to make Lane Cove an LGA no one wants to leave.

Website: https://www.merrisouthwoodforlanecove.org/
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/councillormerrisouthwood

Helena Greenwall – Number Two on Merri’s Ticket

Helena has lived with her family in Lane Cove her whole life, attending Lane Cove Public School and currently owns and operates her own small pet care business based in Lane Cove. She’s currently finishing a BA in Communications and BA in Creative Intelligence and Innovation.

Helena is passionate about promoting sustainability and engaging and supporting younger members of the community. She feels particularly strongly about ensuring that accountability and transparency is at the forefront of all council processes. She believes that community consultation is essential to informing council’s decision making process and must be taken seriously.

In earning her Gold Duke of Edinburgh award she gained a wide range of volunteering experience in the local community and remains passionate about giving back to her community.

Peter Re – number three on Merri’s ticket

Peter Re grew up in Lane Cove, graduated as a Chemical Engineer and worked in industry for over 30 years, currently working for an Australian green-technology company.

Peter and his wife have been Lane Cove residents for over 18 years and now live in the Pottery Green area. Their two children attend St Michael’s Catholic Primary School.  He has managed and coached the various sporting teams in which his children have played.

Peter continues to be concerned that major projects are considered by Council in isolation and that the cumulative impacts of all developments are not being addressed proactively. He believes Council needs more foresight and transparency in development decision-making processes to build in sustainability and retain the amenity of the area.

Lane Cove West Ward Candidates

Rochelle Flood – The Greens

Lane Cove is a beautiful place to live, and it’s been an honour to represent our community over the past three years as your councillor. I’m running for re-election because I’m passionate about ensuring our council listens to residents and makes decisions that allow our community to thrive.

During my term, I’ve been a strong advocate for climate action, delivering initiatives like solar panel and battery storage rebates to help residents switch to renewable energy. I’m proud to have introduced a trial of free period care products in local facilities, tackling period poverty and reducing stigma. I also pushed for council funds to be divested from banks that support the fossil fuel industry.

If re-elected, I will:

  • Continue working to deliver affordable council-run services, including more childcare centres and in-house managed sports facilities to increase affordability and accessibility.
  • Ensure our public parks and fields remain open and welcoming to everyone, including our furry friends.
  • Prioritise transparency and genuine community consultation in all council decisions – including reinstating the public forum at council meetings.
  • Advocate for sustainable transport options including well-connected cycleways and a community shuttle bus.

I’m committed to actively monitoring community concerns; you can reach me anytime by phone, email, or on social media—I’m here to listen.

Murtaza Rangwala number two on Rochelle’s ticket

I’ve lived in Lane Cove for 20 years with my partner and daughter. We have raised a child while working full time carving out a new life from humble beginnings as immigrants in this welcoming community.

A career of service in the  lodging industry for 30+ years allows me to help people and empower businesses for success.  I’d like to see Rochelle Flood re-elected so that we can continue to work collaboratively in ensuring an ethical approach to development and sustainability with clean governance for everyone’s benefit.

Seamus Lee – Number three on Rochelle’s Ticket

I am a long term resident of the lower north shore and have moved recently into Lane Cove. I am currently a senior consultant for a Website Consultancy firm for the last five years. I have a Bachelor degree from the Universityof Sydney. I have been a member of the greens for almost 15 years now.

I am a supporter of improving Lane Cove’s environmental record and would like to see child care and other social amenities improved in Lane Cove. I am running to help get Rochelle Flood re-elected to continue her good work on council standing up for what the community wants.

Katie Little – Labor

I’m patron of the Jeanne Little Alzheimer’s Research Fund with NeuRA, founded to put money into research for the leading cause of death for Australian women. I was featured in Australian Story, spoken on 2GB about Aged Care and 60 Minutes’ covid-19 special.

I’ve always had strong ties to Lane Cove through family and work. My grandmother was a Greenwich resident, and when my neurodiverse children were young was in the plaza every weekend loving the open space, the library, Riverview toy library, and The Cake Man’s vanilla slice – all indispensable!

I’ve watched the development of Lane Cove with awe, such a unique and fabulous LGA so close to the city. From traffic calming to preserving bushland – even making Asbestos-free mulch! – Blackman skatepark, the Canopy, now the Sport & Recreation Centre – Lane Cove has got development right, creating facilities with long term vision guided by a steady hand in project management.

I’m working with an amazing team, guided by Andrew Zbik. I’m online and love talking with people!

My priorities are advocating for a convenience store in the Mowbray Road Precinct, gearing up the Bike Path program, and as a single mum and foster carer working for families, youth and women.

James Hansen – Number two on Katie’s ticket

I’m a father of three, resident of Lane Cove North, and work for Transport for NSW. My professional background spans transport planning, infrastructure consulting, and information technology. My qualifications include an MBA from AGSM UNSW and a Masters degree in City Planning from UNSW.

I’ve lived in the Lane Cove North area for sixteen years and I deeply appreciate the area’s village atmosphere, bushland, river views, and convenient public transport to Chatswood and Sydney CBD.

I am a community representative on the Lane Cove Council Bicycle Advisory Committee and I’m passionate about making our roads and streets more inviting places to live, walk, or ride.

Lane Cove Labor is a great team and I’m keen to work with Katie Little first and foremost to advocate for a convenience store with the redevelopment of 25-29 Mindarie Street.

If elected, I’ll be available via email, or you can reach out to me and the Labor team at https://www.lanecovelabor.org.au/

Heather Ogilive – Number three on Katie’s ticket

I am a Greenwich resident and longtime Labor member.  I’m passionate about women’s rights and have been actively involved in supporting at risk women and children for many years.  In the mid-1970’s, while doing my social work degree at Curtin University, I was part of a student group who set up Perth’s first women’s refuge.

I have been involved in working on many federal and state election campaigns, primarily in Sydney’s inner west when I moved to Sydney in 1980.  After attaining my degree, I retrained as a film producer and have been responsible for feature films and television drama for nearly 40 years, actively also writing for the last 20. I have produced content for Warner Bros, Disney and Paramount Pictures and have taught at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School and the Tisch School of Arts at New York University.

I’m proud to be part of the dynamic Labor team working for the Lane Cove community.  I am especially proud of our headline commitment to provide Safe Spaces for families escaping domestic abuse.  I believe the steps needed to address the shocking rise in women killed by intimate partners requires government engagement at all levels.

Scott Bennison – Independent

Same Leader, Same Values, Different Colour

My time as a Councillor I have delivered projects such as the Canopy, Blackman Park synthetic sports fields and skate park, plaza and swimming pool upgrade

Our team strongly supports the Sport & Recreation Centre as a critical project for our community’s future, providing essential facilities for all ages. Our team in the West Ward is unique—we are the only group of long-term residents and ratepayers, deeply invested in Lane Cove’s continued success.
