Lane Cove News Week in Review 11th to 18th September 2024

Welcome to our week in review. We’ve got NSW Local Government Election updates, the abolishment of the Federal seat of North Sydney, Lane Cove’s Smartest Street, a major achievement by Lane Cove Swim Club and so much more! Put your feet up and get across everything that’s happened in Lane Cove in the past week.

    Election Update

The NSW Local Government elections were held on Saturday 14th September 2024.  Lane Cove Council has three wards and each ward elects 3 councillors.

Vote counting started soon after the polls closed and finished at 10 pm on Saturday. There was no counting on Sunday, and counting restarted on Monday.

The count cannot be concluded until all postal votes have been returned to the NSW Electoral Commissioner. The deadline for returning completed postal votes is 6 p.m. on Friday, September 27, 2024.

When all the votes have been counted, the official announcement of the election results will be declared in writing. Results will be declared between 1 and 3 October 2024.

If you click on the images below it will take you to the NSW EC Lane Cove Ward Count.

It is safe to say that Scott Bennison and Merri Southwood have been reelected.

It also appears that Merri’s second on the ticket Helena Greenwell will also be elected.  Helena has lived with her family in Lane Cove her whole life, attending Lane Cove Public School and currently owns and operates her own small pet care business based in Lane Cove. She’s currently finishing a BA in Communications and BA in Creative Intelligence and Innovation.

In Central Ward, as the ALP was not a second preference on any candidate’s how-to-vote card, it is doubtful that Ken Quail will be one of the three councillors.

Federal Seat of North Sydney Abolished

Federal legislation requires periodic redrawing of federal electoral boundaries to maintain electorates of roughly equal enrolment size within a state or territory.

Redistributions take place every seven years.

Due to population changes, the number of electorates in NSW needed to be reduced from 47 to 46 seats; to achieve this, the Australian Electoral Commission’s Redistribution Committee abolished the seat of North Sydney.

The seat will remain until the next federal election, which will take place in 2025.

North Sydney voters will now be in Bennelong, Bradfield or Warringah.  Lane Cove and Hunters Hill are now in Bennelong.

    Whooping Cough Warning

NSW Health is urging the community to get vaccinated as whooping cough notifications continue to rise across the state, particularly among school-aged children.

NSW Health urges pregnant women, parents, carers of babies, grandparents, and other people in close contact with babies to be vaccinated to protect babies from severe disease.
The latest NSW Health Respiratory Surveillance Report shows whooping cough notifications are at their highest level since 2016, with over 12,000 cases reported from January to September 2024.

People should be aware of the signs and symptoms of whooping cough including:
✅ Whooping cough starts like a cold with a blocked or runny nose, sneezing, a mild fever and an occasional cough.
✅ Coughing bouts can worsen and be followed by vomiting, choking or taking a big gasping breath which causes a “whooping” sound. The cough can last for many weeks and can be worse at night.
✅ Some newborns may not cough at all but stop breathing completely and turn blue. Other babies have difficulties feeding or they can choke and gag.
✅ Older children and adults may just have a mild cough that doesn’t go away. In adults the cough commonly lasts 5-7 weeks, sometimes longer.
NSW Health’s Director of Communicable Diseases Dr Christine Selvey said vaccination in pregnancy is very important to help protect newborn babies who are most at risk of serious illness from whooping cough. “Free whooping cough vaccines are available for all pregnant women. Pregnant women are recommended to be vaccinated between 20 and 32 weeks of every pregnancy as this enables whooping cough antibodies to be transferred to their unborn baby,” Dr Selvey said.
“Parents and carers should ensure all children are vaccinated on time, especially in the first six months of life. “It’s also important all people in contact with newborn babies have had a pertussis vaccine within the previous 10 years.”
People aged 5 years and over can receive pertussis vaccination from GPs, pharmacist immunisers, and Aboriginal medical services.
People with symptoms should contact their GP early and follow their treatment advice and the standard advice to avoid spreading infection to others. After 5 days of treatment with appropriate antibiotics people with whooping cough are no longer infectious but without proper treatment they will remain infectious for 21 days.
Call healthdirect on 1800 022 222 for advice if you are unsure regarding symptoms. If your or your child’s situation is life-threatening, please call Triple Zero (000) or present to your nearest emergency department immediately.

“In an incredible show of community spirit and generosity, 10,000 guests flocked to our annual Jesuit Mission Bazaar on Saturday, 14 September, at Saint Ignatius’ College Riverview in Sydney!

Thank you to all of our amazing supporters and volunteers who came out for a joyful day of friendship and fundraising – schools, parishes, teachers, students, parents and friends.

This year Fr Tony Herbert SJ, himself an old boy of Saint Ignatius’ College Riverview and Hazaribag Missionary of over 50 years, attended the Bazaar and was able to directly thank the community.

“The deeper meaning of your work on the Bazaar, is the fact that you have touched the lives of people far away, people you’ve never seen before, people whose results of your efforts you will not know, said Fr Tony.

Thank you for putting your faith into action by bringing joy to many here, but also touching the lives of those far beyond our immediate reach.
