Lane Cove Council Car Parking – The System Still Has Glitches
ITC posted the following on our Facebook page:
ITC regularly receives emails from locals (and non-locals) asking who they have to contact if they stay for more than three hours in a Lane Cove Car Park. We also still receive queries from people who may have entered the car park in the morning for a short time and then again in the afternoon, and they receive a fine for staying all day.
We have put together tips on how to avoid a fine at a Lane Cove Council-run car park here.
This post prompted one person to check the Lane Cove Parking Website as she had experienced an issue earlier on in the day. She noted on ITC:
“Market place is having issues again. As I was leaving today it came up with a different number plate number to mine. I pressed the button and spoke to a lady who “could see by the camera that my plate was different” and said she’d clear me out. I just checked, thanks to your post, and can see that I am apparently still there and accruing $$$. Grrr not happy”
If in doubt, always check www.lanecoveparking.com.au.
ShareWaste Closing Down on 31st December 2024
Some Lane Cove locals have been sharing their food and organic waste with other locals who are already composting, worm-farming or keeping chickens via ShareWaste. It was a free service run by a dedicated couple.
Due to family reasons, ShareWaste is being closed down.
However, if you want to share your kitchen scraps with a local, the Lane Cove Council has introduced the Lane Cove Compost Network, where you can register to receive food waste or to share your food waste with a local who composts. Read more about it here.
Reminder to Be Careful What You Put in Your Garbage Bins
This is a reminder to be careful what you put in your garbage bin. Lithium batteries, gas bottles, and flammable liquids in your rubbish can cause garbage truck fires.
The city of Canterbury Bankstown is urging residents to recycle right and not put dangerous items in the bin following four garbage truck fires in a month.
One of the latest incidents involved a large lithium battery that was thrown in a recycling bin at a Lakemba apartment block.
The dramatic footage shows the truck’s load catching fire before being driven for a nerve-racking seven minutes to a safe dumping location. Fire and Rescue NSW were called to the scene to extinguish the flames.
In another incident, a fire was sparked inside a garbage truck when a metal container full of flammable liquid was thrown in the red bin. The driver was able to quickly dump the load, where the chemical container was found still smouldering.
And only days earlier, a gas cylinder that was thrown in the red bin exploded in another garbage truck. Staff heard the bang and were able to dump the smouldering load before it caught on fire.
Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Bilal El-Hayek urged all residents to think twice about what they are putting in the bin.
“Throwing batteries and other harmful chemicals in the bin will only fuel the next emergency, putting our community and drivers at risk,” Mayor El-Hayek said.
“We’re lucky that our drivers were able to escape from these recent incidents unharmed, but I don’t want to see anyone hurt.
“Our drivers are here to serve the community and, like everyone else, they deserve to go home to their families safely.”
Council is dropping off flyers on the streets that the incidents may have originated, to educate community members on safe chemical and electrical disposal including Council’s regular cleanout events.

Council Clean Ups
Have you booked a council clean up lately? Have you put out your collection only to find that others have dumped items, which means that you have exceeded the amount permitted for pickup?
On Lane Cove Chat by ITC, some followers have expressed concerns about illegal dumpers, and others have mentioned they have moved in and been told that the previous residents have exhausted their four pickups. This prompted a discussion on whether Lane Cove Council should have regular council clean-ups instead of just four a year.
ITC asked Lane Cove Council if they had investigated alternatives, and a council spokesperson told us:
“There has been no change to the style of household clean up service for at least the last 10+ years. Book-in services are the best practice service offering as they are responsive, efficient / cost effective, and reduce both waste tonnages and dumping. In relation to illegal dumping, in 2020 Council received a LGNSW Excellence in the Environment Award for Behaviour Change in waste recognising a substantial reduction of 75% in dumping since the initiation of an illegal dumping deterrence project in 2016.:
In relation to the four pick ups a year being exhausted – council said new owners are entitled to pick ups. A council spokesperson said:
“Council did previously investigate how best to accommodate the infrequent instances where someone moves into a property and all bookings are allocated. As the four bookings allocated per household are attached to the property address and not the owner, any automated integration was cost-prohibitive and still has margins of exceptions (i.e. tenants, not owners). The process is less formal – someone can call Council if they have recently moved and all four free pick-ups for the year have been exhausted by a previous resident at the address. We’ll work with our staff here and with the contractors to make sure that this information is available more clearly to help those who find themselves in this situation and require assistance.
In the meantime, if there’s someone who requires immediate assistance this week, please refer them to contact Council on 9911 3555.”
