Welcome to our week in review.

Another Break-In at Tobacconist on Longueville Road

The TSG Tobacco store (near Subway) has yet again had its front windows smashed. The first time was in October 2024 and earlier this morning.

    Police Media Unit told ITC:

“A crime scene has been established at a retail store in Lane Cove after a ram raid this morning.

Officers attached to North Shore Police Area Command were called to the business on Longueville Road about 3.50 am (Wednesday, 5 February 2025) and found a vehicle had been used to smash the front of the store.”

At this time, it’s believed cigarettes have been taken.

    An investigation is now underway.”

    Update:

Two teenagers have been arrested following an investigation into a ram raid in Lane Cove this morning.

Officers attached to North Shore Police Area Command were called to the business on Longueville Road about 3.50am (Wednesday 5 February 2025), and found a vehicle had been used to smash the front of the store with cigarettes and cash taken.

A crime scene was established and investigations commenced.

A description of the vehicle – believed to be stolen from a home at Emu Plains overnight – was circulated to police and, about 5.45am, officers attached to North West Metropolitan Region’s Operations Support Group saw it on Water Street, St Marys.

A pursuit was initiated when the driver failed to stop as directed.

The pursuit continued to Werrington where the vehicle was allegedly driven into a police car before the alleged driver, a 15-year-old boy, and a 16-year-old girl, were arrested at the scene

They have been taken to Penrith Police Station where inquiries are continuing.

    Luna New Year Celebrations

Many locals turned out on Friday, 31 January 2025, to welcome the Year of the Snake.

Lane Cove Council arranged free activities throughout the plaza and the Canopy, including crafts, drumming, a baby lion dance, a movie screening, and the main event: the lion dance performance by Pak Hok Kung Fu International Inc.

Mayor Merri Southwood was given the honour of dotting the eyes of the new Lions.

Busy Bees Child Care Centre Temporarily Closed

Busy Bees Childcare Centre on Burns Bay Road temporarily closed on 20th December 2024.

The operators and the owner had been working to address essential remediation works at the site. However, the onset of summer storms meant the centre had to close to allow for more significant work.

The centre is located in the historic Mandalay house. Its completion is expected to take six months.

    Road Works in Longueville

Significant resurfacing road works commenced in Longueville on Wednesday 5th February.

Kenneth Street resurfacing works are being completed between Woodford and Cowper Streets and Mary Street to Belcote Road. Kenneth Street is closed to traffic during work hours, and detours are in place. Traffic management staff are onsite to assist.

Works will be conducted from 7 am – 5 pm for approximately 6 days.

Bus commuters (route 261) and school students are advised to check for route changes along Kenneth Street and allow more time to accommodate these works.

    Councillor Workshop Expenses

At the start of each year, councillors around NSW meet to discuss the priorities and agenda for the next twelve months. Last year, The Post reported on Ku-ring-gai Council’s Councillor retreat, which was held at a luxury resort. The Sydney Morning Herald reported that the Ku-ring-gai Councillors have again checked into a hotel (the Hydro Majestic) for their 2025 Councillor Workshop.

ITC knows that Lane Cove Council traditionally holds their councillor workshops outside Sydney. We asked Merri Southwood, Lane Cove Mayor, where the Councillor workshop weekend would be held in 2025, and we were advised that the Mayor decided to have the 2025 two-day workshop at St Leonard’s Library.

Council spending is under scrutiny after the Northern Beaches Council resolved to raise rates by 40% over three years. Next week, the North Sydney Council will discuss increasing rates by nearly 90% over the next two years.
