Lane Cove is set to host a powerful and inspiring event: the “Weaving Stories” Film Festival, culminating the council’s innovative “Weaving Climate Stories” project

Lane Cove Council has been fostering community connection through its “Weaving Climate Stories” project, a diverse initiative designed to unite residents.

With a range of engaging courses, workshops, and a highly anticipated film festival, there’s been something for everyone.

The core of “Weaving Climate Stories” lies in its commitment to building bridges within the community.

The project recognises the importance of creating spaces for residents to connect, share experiences, and collaborate on meaningful projects, particularly concerning the pressing issue of climate change.

Weaving Stories Short Film Festival at The Canopy

The Weaving Stories Short Film Festival occurs at The Canopy on Saturday, 22nsd March 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.   This free film festival promises to celebrate local storytelling and a vital platform for addressing climate change.

The short film festival is the grand finale of a multifaceted project that has empowered Lane Cove residents to become climate ambassadors through filmmaking and community engagement. Local filmmakers have crafted short films exploring the urgent theme of climate change, and these cinematic expressions will be showcased at the festival.

Adding to the excitement, the MC for the event is Luke Carroll, known for his roles on “Play School” and “Sydney Weekender.”

    But Wait There’s More

The  “Weaving Stories” Film Festival is more than just a screening. From 4:00 pm, locals can explore interactive stalls hosted by the Lane Cove Council team, sustainability groups, and local organisations. These stalls will offer activities and information on climate action, providing practical ways for individuals to contribute to a sustainable future.

A highlight of the pre-film activities will be the unveiling of a community art piece created by Dr Virginia Keft, a proud Muruwari woman and participant in the eight “Weaving & Yarning” workshops. This collaborative artwork symbolizes the community’s shared connection to culture and country, weaving together stories and experiences through traditional techniques.

Dr. Keft, an award-winning multi-disciplinary artist, has guided participants through the art of weaving, fostering cultural connection and understanding.

Open to all skill levels and ages, her workshops have created a welcoming space for community members to contribute to a collective vision. The resulting artwork will be added to the Lane Cove Art Collection, ensuring its lasting impact.  See our cover photo.

    Digital Filmmakers

The “Weaving Climate Stories” project, is funded by the NSW Government through the NSW Social Cohesion Grants for Local Government, has also included “Future Filmmaker & Sharing Stories” workshops.

These workshops were open to people of all ages and provided participants with access to Digital Storytellers workshops, equipping them with the skills to develop impactful stories. Participants were taught everything from discovering their story to filming, editing, and preparing for the big screen. The most exciting part? The opportunity to see their short films screened at the 2025 festival.

    Picnic Style Festival

The festival will be a picnic-style event, encouraging locals to bring picnic blankets or low chairs. This casual atmosphere reinforces a sense of community and shared experience, which is in line with the project’s focus on collective action.

The “Weaving Stories” Film Festival is a testament to Lane Cove Council’s commitment to sustainability (which includes social connection).

In 2024, Lane Cove Council’s sustainability efforts were recognised at the Local Government NSW Excellence in Environment Awards, where Lane Cove took out three Awards, including the prestigious Local Sustainability Award.

By blending art, storytelling, and sustainability, the Weaving Climate project has created a unique platform for residents to connect, learn, and take action on climate change.
