The Lane Cove Theatre Company’s first production of the year, If/Then, is receiving great reviews at the new performance space at Pottery Lane. The season runs until 30 March 2025.
We asked a roving reporter to review the show ….
Few questions in life are as compelling as what if? The roads not taken, the choices we make…the choices we don’t make.
If/Then, a contemporary Broadway musical by Kitt and Yorkey—the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning team behind Next to Normal—explores possibility, reinvention, and forward momentum.
It’s a particularly apt choice for Lane Cove Theatre Company’s first production in the newly opened Pottery Lane Performance Space. Realised after more than thirty years of tireless advocacy by Lane Cove Theatre Company and many other community groups, and made possible through the support of Council, this dedicated, shared performance space marks the beginning of a new chapter for the performing arts in Lane Cove.
Taking on a role originated by Broadway powerhouse Idina Menzel is no small task, and Daisy Cousens rises to the challenge with showstopping talent, making the role(s) of Elizabeth—Liz and Beth—entirely her own.
An equally impressive cast joins Cousens: Isaac Downey, Trent Gardiner, Belinda Korner, Lindford Gilmour, Jacqui Greenfield, Luke Derrick, and Genevieve Skye all deliver thoughtful, engaging performances. They are ably supported by a vibrant ensemble featuring Amy Fowler, Zach Godsmark, Euan Howells, Natalie Hughes, and Mike Kulikov.
Musical Director Stephen Dula leads a live band whose performance perfectly complements the cast’s vocals.
The tech crew fully uses the new performance space, enhancing the show with creative lighting design and a full-size LED backdrop. These elements work cohesively with the minimal set to make the actors’ performances—directed with precision by Lochie Beh—pop.
The professionalism of this production, both on and offstage, is all the more impressive given that Lane Cove Theatre Company is entirely volunteer-run.
We look forward to the what-ifs of future productions in this long-awaited venue.
