Lane Cove News Week in Review 28th May to 4th June 2025

Welcome to our week in review.

    Children’s Voices For Reconciliation

On Thursday 29 May 2025 local schools, preschools and early childhood centres gathered at The Canopy for the 28th annual Children’s Voices For Reconciliation event.

This year’s theme was “Bridging Now to Next” reflecting the ongoing connection between past, present and future. Bridging Now to Next urges us to look ahead and continue the push forward as past lessons guide us.

This event allows young people in the area to learn about and engage with Reconciliation through story, song, poetry, art, music or dance.

    Australia Post Update

Lane Cove Post Office has recently gone through a decluttering process. This led several readers to ask if it was closing down. An Australian Post spokesperson told ITC there are no plans to shut down the Lane Cove Post Office.

However, Australia Post has removed a mailbox from the corner of Alpha Road and Longueville Road – a sign of the times with the decline in snail mail.

    Bob Campbell Oval Update

Lane Cove Council are pleased to announce that the first stage of upgrade works at Bob Campbell Oval are now complete. The following new and improved facilities are available to enjoy as of 3 June 2025:

    • Children’s playground with swings and adventure play equipment
    • Picnic shelters and two electric BBQs
    • Fitness equipment
    • New access stairs to the bay
    • Public toilets in the new amenities building

At the northern end of the park there is a shared area that can be used for off-leash dog exercise.

Please note that the sports field remains closed to allow the newly laid turf to properly establish.

The playing field is expected to open in early Spring 2025. To help keep everything on track, park users are asked not to use the field before it’s ready, as any premature use could delay the opening.

Traffic Signal Construction at Lane Cove Sport & Recreation Centre

Construction works will soon commence to upgrade the intersection of River Road at the entrance to the Golf Course and the new Lane Cove Sports and Recreation Centre.

This upgrade will include the installation of traffic signals with pedestrian crossings on all approaches, aimed at improving both safety and traffic flow. Construction is scheduled to begin next week and is expected to be completed by December 2025, weather permitting.

Residents can expect some noise during construction. To reduce the impact, noisier tasks will be scheduled during daytime hours wherever possible. The majority of work will occur during the day, but some night works will be necessary. The contractor will notify affected residents in advance via a letterbox drop.

Temporary traffic changes will be in place to ensure safety during construction. Concrete barriers and/or traffic controllers will be used to manage traffic flow and maintain safe access for both vehicles and pedestrians at all times.

Construction of the Sport and Recreation Centre continues to progress despite the recent wet weather. Lane Cove Golf Club included the below ‘Then and Now’ photo comparison in a recent newsletter to members.

Winter Warning for Burns Injuries in Children

Parents and caregivers are being urged to take extra care around hot food, drinks, and open flames this winter, following a surge in burns injuries among children. In 2024, more than 400 children in NSW were treated for scald burns caused by hot drinks, instant noodles, and kitchen appliances. An additional 48 suffered contact burns from stoves, cooktops, and BBQs.

Already this year, over 120 children have needed care for similar injuries.

Many people take the opportunity in cooler months to go on camping adventures or gather near wood-burning fires. As fire pits and outdoor fires grow in popularity, experts are also warning families to be cautious around open flames. Children should be kept well away from fire areas—even after the flames are out—as the ground can remain dangerously hot.

Most injuries occur in children under two, whose thin skin burns more easily. Health authorities are reminding parents that close supervision and simple precautions—like keeping hot items out of reach and setting household hot water to 50°C—can significantly reduce risk.

In the event of a burn, the best first aid is 20 minutes of cool running water, removing clothing near the burn, and avoiding home remedies. Medical attention should be sought if needed.

The safety push is part of National Burns Awareness Month, aiming to prevent injuries and promote effective first aid.
