Lane Cove Locals Love a Water Bubbler

New data from Sydney Water’s water refill station network shows locals and tourists have been slurping up free hydration on the go, with over 1,655,468 litres of water consumed from January to December 2024.  The top place to fill up your water bottle was Blackman Park with 170,000 litres of water consumed by locals.

Sydney Water has kept the equivalent of 2,759,113 plastic bottles from circulation as people across Sydney, the Blue Mountains and Illawarra opt for a gulp from one of Sydney Water’s water refill stations while out and about instead of purchasing a single-use plastic water bottle.

Sydney Water Ambassador Shane Jacobson said the water refill stations have been very popular as people become more conservative with their spending.

“With the average single use plastic water bottle retailing for anywhere between $3 and $7, Sydney Water customers are also saving some money while doing the right thing for the environment, which is a win-win if you ask me,” Mr Jacobson said.

“There are over 250 water refill stations across the Sydney Water network and I strongly encourage people out and about to explore their local area and take advantage of the water stations provided.”

The water refill stations are in popular community areas such as parks, cycle tracks, near beaches and other high-traffic pedestrian locations.

While usage data trends higher during the summer months, there remains a steady demand for the water refill stations as Sydney dips into the cooler months.

“We are seeing a real investment from the community in the water refill stations, with millions of litres consumed since the water station program was established in 2018,” Mr Jacobson said.

“We are thrilled to see people embracing the water stations in their area and making use of this resource to stay hydrated.”
