Need Help to Get that Job? Find Out About Lane Cove Council’s Get That Job Successful Workshops

For the past couple of years, Lane Cove Council has been hosting Get That Job workshops for residents who have been made redundant or are struggling to find employment.

It’s a free programme that has provided Lane Cove locals with the skills and confidence to get a new job.  The next series of workshops begins on Thursday 28 February 2026.

Barbara Barnes is a Lane Cove Local who participated in one of the Get That Job workshops and she told In The Cove the following:

Transitioning a mid-career crossroad and beyond:  Barbara Barnes

When you first start your career, you settle into a role, learning the skills required for the position. The thought of what you may be doing in 10, 20 years’ time may be far from your mind. But time passes quickly, and the world of work changes considerably. Today, this change is accelerating.

Many people today find themselves in mid-career, pursuing new and often very different opportunities. Organisational restructuring, redundancies, life stages, and technological change can all create a very challenging situation.

It’s obviously important, if you can, to get help resolving these issues.

As a long-standing Lane Cove resident, I was pleased to learn that assistance is available locally.

Lane Cove Council and career coach Mike Taylor have put together a free program to help you navigate the changed job search requirements.

The program is called Get That Job.

Initially, there is a four-hour workshop with extensive, detailed notes.

Following the workshop, participants have the opportunity to start each week of the program at a Monday morning coffee meeting with Mike, sharing ideas, contacts, advice etc.

Individual meetings with Mike are also available on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

A big benefit of the program, as Mike says, is that you don’t have to face this challenge “on your own, isolated at the kitchen table.”

If you are out of work and seeking a new opportunity, I highly recommend this program.

    Who Is Mike Taylor?

Mike Taylor knows a thing or two about getting a job in today’s competitive market. Mike is a Lane Cove local who has been running the ‘Get that Job’ program with Lane Cove Council’s backing for the past five years.

He decided to approach the Council after sensing a need in the community for those who had been made redundant, who were experiencing mid-career issues, or who were finding things extremely difficult.

Mike’s background includes work in the airline, oil, consulting, and career management industries in the UK and Australia. He holds degrees from Essex University and the London School of Economics, as well as graduate certificates in counselling.

Having left paid employment, he volunteers his time.

    Testimonials From Other Participants

Piyush Nasa participated in the workshop, and he told ITC:

“Applying the techniques shared by Mike became a game-changer in my job-seeking journey. His mentorship equipped me with skills and instilled the importance of strategic networking. I successfully secured a position at Macquarie Bank, a testament to the effectiveness of Mike’s ‘Get that Job’ approach.”

Deepika Nand participated in the workshop and she told ITC:

“One of the standout aspects of the “Get That Job” program was the focus on interview coaching. After countless unsuccessful job applications, I was on the verge of giving up. Mike introduced the concept of direct marketing, which transformed my approach. I stopped relying solely on online applications and started building my network by attending career expos and actively seeking connections. Mike’s one-on-one coaching enabled me to excel in interviews, and I secured a job with just one interview.”

Robina Bonwick participated in the workshop and she told ITC:

“What is unique about this programme is the amount of follow-up support given by Mike. The group meets once a week for coffee to swap information, and experiences and give moral support, which is invaluable if you are in between jobs! Mike also makes himself available for one-on-one sessions to work on any aspect you need, including interview practice.

This face-to-face approach keeps you moving forward and refining each job-hunting skill.

This programme helped me rebuild my confidence and target my search with the result that I am now working for Macquarie University in a job that ticks all my boxes, and I’m loving it.”
